What drives me mad is the progress is not bad to 95% then drags its heels for the last 5% it’s even worse with my x150
It is like Microsoft Progress Dialogs. Totally erroneous. 95% of what? They are based on rubbish algorithms and are there to stop you pressing buttons and crashing the programme. Error trapping and recovery are pretty naff as well. It is 20+ years of amateurish code after all.

Better to play you the F1 until something happens. Wups! Did I suggest that watching F1 was more entertaining than watching SDD? 😜

Well Guys ECU turned up today came from Jojags when I ordered he said he had a compatible ECU on arrival there was no label on it, so I took the chance and installed it on firing up SDD the ECU turned out to be from a 4.2😡. Never less the throttle body came back to life 🎉proving the faulty ECU. Had to flash gearbox to 4.2 and reprogram immobiliser and ABS. The vin number is also from the other car In ECU still to figure out if I can change this via SDD or if I need to move chips over from old ECU. Also I’m assuming lambda sensors will deal with any possible furling problems. I’m the meantime I’m still keeping my eye out for a 3.5 ECU.

@ALUCAN sorted his ECU vin mismatch maybe he can help.
Nope! I ended up living with the donor VIN. However, you can reconfigure most of the rest with SDD. (Dealer Options).

One of your problems may be that the gearbox calibrates to the more powerful 4.2 and then throws errors. Not sure if it also messes up engine mapping and fuel pressures, etc.

Did you compare the donor ECM Jaguar part number with the original ECM? If identical the rest is all programmable except the VIN. Getting this changed by Jaguar potentially leads to Police interviews as they are obliged to report apparent "ringers". Could at best mean lengthy explanations and proof of ownership (keep hold of your original ECM), or worst being taken off the road.

If you enter a Diagnostic session in SDD, select communication as the only symptom then you should be offered an Update ECM procedure. I believe that you can enter an alternative VIN and engine, but I have never run the procedure or put it to the test. There is a TSB on the subject somewhere.

If you can get that sorted then there isn't a need to shop for a 3.5 ECM.

Is there an easy means to reflash with standard software? Jaguar reckons mine is either corrupted or knurdled ECM after a dodgy jumpstart. I requested a reflash but they wouldn't risk it, despite reading on here that Jaguar suggest that as a cure in a TSB.

1. I am not a guru or expert.
2. Very little is easy on these cars.

You can try a reflash through SDD, but if knurdled then it will fail.

First things first. Have you done a thorough clean of the ECM connection?

Are there any decipherable fault codes?

Hi Alucan
had a look at programming the ecu via the communication route I didn’t get the update ECM module option. I did find it via power train select a recommendation then extras. However I ended up having to program rear ECM, Gearbox, ignition switch and after all that didn’t let me change anything on the ECU. Then it locked me out of rear ECM due I think to the vin number conflict. I got it all back up after a lot of messing about. I think now my car is actually back running I’m going to eventually bite the bullet and get a new ECU.

You may be confusing the Engine Control Module (ECM under the dash), Rear Electronic Module (REM inside the boot drivers side). Have you configured the car manually first? There will be quite a few to do changing back from 4.2 to 3.5. If not it will use the VIN-based configuration from the 4.2.

If you don't have a build sheet for your 3.5 (Jaguar were a bit snotty about the age of my car when telling me that their records don't go that far back) you can read and decode the VCATS label in the boot.

Then it is more SDD configuration in the strict order offered by SDD diagnostics Communications scan.

It all depends on how much pain you can endure. In my case stubbornness and refusal to be beaten by a mere machine.

Pity there was no label on the donor ECM for comparison with the original. Could you read a Jaguar part number? Without a label the seller was not being entirely honest if he described it as for a 3.5.

Was quite disappointed in seller tbh, there is a 3.5 ECU on eBay currently but last 2 different. Don’t know if it’s worth my while at moment as car is now a runner don’t know if I could stomach much more at moment might take a step back my mind is melting. My good friend that is helping me almost had a heart attack when we lost rear electronic unit last night took hours to get it back!!
