Insurance Renewal - Always Shop Around

3488 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  simpo3
And so my insurance company sends me a reminder that my insurance will auto renew in a few weeks and that I didn’t have to do anything, everything has been taken care of!

But here was the problem! My premium has gone up. They wanted roughly £1400, politely reminding me that insurance premium tax has gone up to 12% and I would also benefit from multi-car discount. My no claims bonus stands at 11 years plus. In the past, I would assume this is the best offer and live with it. But I thought it would be interesting to shop around. Confused.com came to mind.

After just 10 minutes of filling in details I had so much choice presented to me. The best quote was around £462.00. After adding NC and legal protection, it came to roughly £489.00. Now, that’s a significant saving of some 2/3.

Wow. It pays to shop around.
And the best quotes can always be found online. The insurance companies will tell you that too.

I assume all insurance companies are equal.
Or, are they?

That's a fair saving for sure Jagman , always pays to shop around.
Nice work. I always check my quote with the meerkats and it keeps things reasonable.

I was surprised to find that the premium for a 2006 XK convertible was exactly the same - to the £ - as the 2011 XF 3.0D it replaced.

Bare in mind many of these prices are to attract new custom, previously I've found some of the increases after the first year has been shocking in the extreme (AA springs to mind here).
That price is so much cheaper though it can't just be new customer discount.

Having been insured with Direct Line for a number of years now I would have said no. Some of the insurers I've been with in the past have proven very difficult when it came to a claim. Recent experience with DL & an accident that was the other parties fault (which they accepted without issue) makes me change my mind.

When it comes time to renew I certainly won't spend money buying guaranteed car hire(+) or legal protection either as both have proved to be useless to me when I most needed them.

Just my tuppence:-D

Blimey....glad I live in Cornwall then! My quote was £178 with protected ncb. That was limited mileage though of 5k a year.
£178?! One has to ask... who with?
Admiral.....my Volvo is already insured with them (£226 per year) so on asking for a quote for the Jag was amazed at what they came back with. And I made sure my no claims on both vehicles isn't lumped together if I go elsewhere next year.
I paid £309 with admiral for my XK, which I switched over last month to the XE that's with 13 years NCB protected and 6k a year.

£178?..

You must live on a private street in a private island!
Each year at renewal I question the necessity of paying for both 'protecting' my NCB and the so-called 'legal protection'.

It seems to me that whether you have a claim or not the premium is likely to rise and it is indeed the case that even with NCB 'protection' the underwriters can still hit you with a potentially significant increase at renewal if they feel like it. There's no small print that guarantees any premium will remain low.

As for 'legal protection', frankly I think I'd rather rely upon my own lawyer than some random solicitor of whom I've never heard and whose trust is not proven to me.

... and a double-locked garage, enhanced factory fitted alarms and a cctv van following you wherever you go 24/7 with two security guards on board!

Hmm, I'm with Elephant which is Admiral too. It just shows how much difference Cornwall makes - either that or you're a 200-year-old teacher!

Amusingly when I called to put the XK on cover, their system didn't have 'XK' - the closest was 'XH'...! But then, if the car has more than 4 cylinders and 2 litres, they usually haven't heard of them. 'TVR? Is that a Triumph?'
Its a lottery isn't it? To even it up a bit I did get quotes for £300 plus from some companies so I obviously caught the Admiral sales guy on a good day at £178. They obviously think the only risk to us down at the pointy end is colliding with a tractor, which all joking aside happens a lot believe it or not!
Just had my renewal quote for the next year with SAGA, £163.
Not too bad as it's cover for both me and my beloved.
That includes £16.50 for "Increased Personal Accident" cover and a £20 renewal fee .
I'll be dropping the extra cover so hopefully next years cover should be about £147.
I suppose it's one of the benefits of getting older and living away from the big cities !!

Doh, having a senior moment !!!!
The renewals for our Range Rover not the Jag.
That was £227 in March for us both.
Last year I paid £420, just checked with Admiral and they want £787 :???:. I think not!!
As to them being equal, well they operate the same way in principle but when it comes to new customers, insurance companies actuarial systems will often have a filter that favours the fact you are new business making the quote cheaper than renewal with your current insurer. AA gave me the best deal this year because i am with them for breakdown and i found it interesting that comparethemarket could determine that when preparing the online estimate. They share a lot of info between them!
AA quoted me £675 and after haggling I got it to £517 and a £30 voucher for B&Q, went on the compare sites and cheapest was £345 with coop

Then I remembers the insurance company on here they have come back and beaten the Meerkat quote :)
I'm starting to think that the insurance companies use dice.

Three dice to make the first quote.

Two dice to make the number they knock off if you haggle.

Let's get some dice and try it...

'Hello I'd like to insure my car please'
'Certainly sir, that will be... (rattle rattle) 4, 1, 1. Er, I mean that will be £411 please sir'.
'That's too much, can you make it any lower?'
'Let's see... (rattle rattle) yes, we could knock off 5 and 6, I mean £56...'
