hi guys, after some sudden news regarding me being a referee i decided i needed a more economical car from my x308 xjr, ive had a few problems with it since i bought it which helped my decision as im spending money on the carwhich if i keep spending money will be more than the cars worth.

ive hummed and harred over which car, i liked a few diesel s types but ive decided that i may put a deposit down on this car 2004 Jaguar XJ6 3.0 V6 SE 4dr Auto Saloon

im after your advice, obviously corrosion is a issue what else should i be looking for?

With the mileage on this one i would think that the major worry would be the gearbox. You would need to make sure that the fluid has been changed as at 91k, if it hasn't, problems could start to arise. Also, make sure the air suspension is o.k. with no faults showing, and there are no clunks or rattles which could mean worn bushes.

Petrol stations!

Gearbox sump/sleeve due to arrive for mine tomorrow (preventative rather than necessity) and its done 128k (the last 24k at higher boost and harder driving than during its chauffeuring days!) so wouldnt worry too much at 91k,
I forgot to ask this, jaguar recommended on my x308 not to touch my gear box as it could open a can of worms and may create problems, have u had this done yet?

By the way I love ur car its a beauty
Had my gearbox oil changed at 70k. Don't believe in the sealed for life approach!

Buck - how have you got your picture signature working on these new forums???
Nice car i had a s type before 3L but got ride had a problem with the engine mangament light on.Took the car to the jag inde but they could not find out what was causing it, so drove round for 3 yrs with light on lol.Had no problems with it they said could been a dodgy sensor.Anyway i got a diesel 2006 with 60,000 miles now.It had a problem with a leaking gearbox wich was fixed they had to drain gearbox oil replace with new and replace with a new gearbox pan. They did say its a known fault on. Maybe a good idea to have it done anyway the oil.
Had my gearbox fluid changed at 90K along with the sump which contains the integral filter.
I drive it a lot and have not noticed any difference. My Indie considered it a good idea when I asked about it and so do a lot of owners in the USA.
Nice car by the way.

I didnt it transferred over from the old forum
I noticed in the bbcode there is one with [sigpic][/sigpic] so maybe yo could change your img codes to sigpic codes?
If it doesnt work I cant help any further its down to Admin to sort
It looks good in the pictures, but did you actually see the car "in the flesh" before putting down a deposit ? On his sort of miles, a lot of things with a short life would have been replaced by now if the owners have been diligent. Anyway, suspension bush wear will cause MOT failures, so are likely to have been done.

I have a similar car to the one you propose buying. but on a lot less miles, (OK, it cost me more). The V6 petrol is a superb engine and you shouldnt have any problems with it. As regards the gearbox warning, you may find you get some rough changes and sometimes a tranny fault message. These are almost invariably caused by software, (the gearbox is electronically controlled, but the controller doesn't compensate for normal box wear), the fault detector detects an overly rough change, and ocasionally, you need a software reload to compensate for this. I would think it worthwhile to change the transmission fluid at the next service.

Corrosion will likely be found at: -
- leading edge of boot lid
- creep out from lower rear screen seal at left and right sides
- rear door edges

All of this is classic aluminium filiform corrosion caused by a paint hole or defect allowing it to start. Filiform creeps and creeps, and usually starts in a crevice somewhere. If you've got it on the boot lid, repaint, then cut off the rear screen seal lip to stop grit again accumulating and scratching the paint away every time you open the boot.

It's a reliable car, but some of the suspension parts are a bit short on life especially if the car has been run with very low profile tyres on large diameter wheels, as in my case.

Buck what gearbox oil would you recommend? Already know where every petrol station is!
After numerous emails back and forth to Millers I bought 11 ltrs of their ATF DM for under £12 delivered (dont ask)
They said it meets Shell ATF M1375.4 spec
im looking at it next week, nothings concrete yet, i will keep everyone posted, everyones input has been great, im really thankful, fingers crossed
Can anyone recommend a supplier in the UK for a gearbox sump, filter and spare set screws.

Thanks
