The rear number plates on UK cars are oblong the imports are squarish?

From memory there is information on the V5 to indicate the car is imported, I believe the date registered in the UK is a giveaway.

Are you thinking of buying a Japanese import?

Many years ago I bought a Imported Toyota MR2. I went to see two, both were low mileage , however one of them showed signs of wear to the seats, steering wheel and pedals. Obvious signs that the advertised mileage of 30K was not correct, when I questioned the seller his response was the Japanise only drive for short distances and therefore spend most of the time getting in and out of the car. Needless to say I walked away.

So if you are buying an import remember that it is going to be difficult confirming any history and also confirm that whoever you insure the car with know that it is a import and they confirm they insure imports. I have a story to tell about the insurance company I used, but that is for another day.
