Locking wheel nuts. The final answers ?

I am new to the forum and have not even collected my X Type yet.
I cannot RTFM as I do not yet have that so I have been trawling this site and have found lots of very useful information.

One topic I keep finding is about failure of locking wheel nuts / keys etc.

My conclusions are either :-

1 Remove the locking wheel nut asap and fit a normal nut.
This may increase the risk of wheels being lost

or

2. Remove the locking wheel nut asap and fit McGuard locking wheel nuts.
( torque wrench etc when refitting)
McGuard have been standard fitting on some Fords for many years and I am not aware of any problems.
Reviews that I have read in the past seem to consider them as about the best.
Jaguar seem to be in agreement that they are the best. Why ?
The 2006 accessory brochure shows the older troublesome type
The 2007 accessory brochure shows what look to me as McGuard.

I intend to swop to McGuard asap.
I recently had to have another brand of lock nut drilled out and a new wheel stud fitted.
I reverted to normal nuts as surprisingly there was only one make of locking nut available.

I have just put normal nuts on mine as i think in this day and age with nearly every car on the road having alloys they are just a waste of time
Trouble is, there's still an awful lot of theiving scroats out there. Every house has a television, but I bet you still lock the house when you leave. If you only have normal nuts, you've "removed standard security equipment" from the vehicle, and I bet a typically weaselly insurance company wouldn't pay out on a wheel theft claim if they did go missing.
No i never lock the door when i go out lol

but ye i get what you mean

Why change them? I know a lot of people moan about them but if you care for them like the engine they'll be fine. Mine are copper slipped and they are taken off every 2-3 months, either at service time or oil change. The only problem ive had in three years is when i lost the damned key. Brought 3 new ones and then the original turned up. I always make sure the key is never used with an air wratchet as I take the nuts off before it goes to the garage for anything and I always torque them up.

I looked after mine as well but it didn't stop the locking wheel nut from splitting, so ended up replacing with standard nuts.
Unlikely to ever get pinched and if they do great! a new set of wheels and tyres off the insurance.
a new set of wheels and tyres off the insurance.
Mine came with wheel locks as factory fitted, without them my insurance would be void so have to have them on
My key broke yesterday, just waiting for an e-mail from SBWheels, thanks to this forum, to let me know if he has a replacement key. If not then I might try Kwik Fit and see if they are able to remove them for me.
My key broke also, got new set from SB wheels, still think there worth having as jag locking wheel nuts are a pain to remove, had to get an indie to chisel them off in order to replace with my new locking nuts.
I lost the key to mine (std jag nuts) and my friendly RAC man removed them in seconds! What a waste of time I though - so I have replaced them with standard nuts.
