"New engine fitted.."

I'm going to see an 07 TDVi tomorrow hopefully. Its my third choice engine wise but the rest of the car looks very fresh from the pictures.

However I keep seeing adverts for other diesel XJs (not this one!) proudly proclaiming "Engine replaced blah blah at a cost of £6000 blah blah". Its really putting the willys up me, but the choice of newer petrol cars is so narrow.

Just asking thos who have been on these forums a long time, how many genuine diesel scare stories have you heard, and any advice from actual owners?

Thanks
Mark

Don't let the horror stories put you off.
Most 2.7 / 3.0 V6 diesel failures are in ragged Disco's.
Keeping an eye on the oil if you don't do long journeys is key,
Read up on the DPF concerns , nothing to worry about though really.
They just need maintaining well with genuine parts and quality oils.
More than happy with mine in every respect. :)
Don't buy a Diesel just out of frustration at the lack of Petrol Engined Cars , keep on looking , my opinions are the same as Eddies
as regards the proper care and maintenance of the engine

Hi Lester, hope I can help....
First, pm sent but only a brief rundown as the forum wouldn't let me pm it all......unsure if you've seen this?

I have a 58 2.7 Tdvi and have never had those issues, one of my friends who I happened to see today has, along with many other XF and S type 2.7Tdvi engines have had to replace engines
This is because generally they aren't in the know and have therefore been unable to avoid the issues.

DPF related, partial regens not completed mean that excess fuel is dumped into the oil, the oil level rises and rises until if left unchecked can result in diesel engine runaway ( self fuelling essentially )
THAT is pretty much it in a nutshell

The answer?
Check oil levels frequently, especially if you are doing lots of stop / start round town journeys, which I do as it happens. I also do the odd long motorway run on business that can be 200, 300 or up to 800+ miles in one go.

Sometimes people have had service reminders and said to themselves, I'll leave it another week or two and do it at the end of the month, this can be a costly mistake with this engine as the service reminder also comes on due to an algorithm that checks the oil quality, major warning right there.

Me personally, I change my oil around 3-4 times per year, usually using National Tyres who use the correct grade and do the job for £40
Some members have invested small change and bought these suction pumps and do a flush / change themselves every other time etc

Doing this and being fully armed about the potential issues and how to deal with them mean you can buy and use these cars with no issues, where others have failed.

Hope this helps Lester

Thanks chaps. Its not really buying out of frustration, its a good car I want not just an engine. And a reasonable price/mileage compromise.

This looked likely to be my dream car;

http://www.thejagcentre.com/used-cars/jaguar-xj-4-2-v8-xjr-4dr-201702031959308

until I saw the price; typical dealer approach to what should be a high mile cheapy. There was a twin of this vehicle with 49k miles sold for £9500 earlier this year which is much more like it.

Dealers (and private punters!) all seem to leap on the notion that "this was a £60000 car when new!" etc etc, ...well so what? Blur were no.1 and Tony Blair was PM, and they look pretty haggard now don't they!

Wow, that car should be around £7700 on a private sale, so knowing dealers they could be around £9k - £10k

Asking £12k they're obviously expecting to be brought down somewhat but major mark up there

Jim
This one has been on their car lot for some time , I actually viewed it back in February.

I think it was up for £12,995 back then , my £10k cash offer to drive away that day was a no go.
Looks like he will be taking the £10k nearly a year later by the looks of things ........
Supposedly a "fastidious owner" allegedly ??

Unsure what those alloys are but they don't look good whatever they are, also look faded as if visited too many Romanian car washes with acid wheel cleaners
Those exhaust tips have seen better days too.
Nothing fastidious about that car from my point of view

Jim
I'm sure I may have seen these alloys or similar on a X308 XJR
The alloys are Sabres, quite rare here and more commonly fitted to US spec XJs from my observations. I like them, but they only seem to suit the performance R for some reason....

The trouible with low interest rates id that dealers have very little to lose just leaving a car laying around for the one desperate person to come along. Some of the cars I'm seeing in Autotrader have literally been for sale since January!!!

Hopefully a new winter lull coming might sharpen their minds, but maybe not.
If your dream car is a petrol, then hold out for the engine of your choice. I see no point buying diesel, unless your mileage dictates it.
Regarding failures, the 2.7d seems to have the biggest amount of horror stories on the forum out of all engines. Mainly DPF related, probably down to short trips.
On of the plans for the car was to be as a euro cruiser for trips away. Admittedly this would be a small percentage of the total annual miles, but my daily commute is 45 mins/25 miles which is probably just on the cusp of getting the EGR stuff working.

Anyhow I haven't been to see the car today, a night out last night meant I couldn't get my head off the pillow at 6am as planned. I don't know about you chaps but the days of leaping out of bed to get to car shows or cars for sale at the other end of the country seem to be ebbing away as I nudge 50. Thats why I want a Jag instead of the rabid sportscars I'm used to, a bit of comfort in my dotage might encourage the cross country trips that used to hold such joy!

I'm in the factory at Washington today (Tuesday) if you want a to try the XJR........
Really a case of looking and waiting for the right one. It does depend on your Budget but if it is the high 000's then you will find a great car for that, and your preferred colour scheme and spec.
Look for a 3 litre petrol. OK, it's not as economical as the diesel, but you should get a reasonable mpg on your commute of 25 miles if it's not too stop-start. This V6 is the hidden secret of the X350/358. No DPF, no EGR, no exhaust manifold cracking, problems. They just go and go. Of course they still suffer the other X350 issues but so do the diesels.
Bollox, I was off Tuesday as well but just seen this. I'll PM you my number for next time.

Theres a nice V6 Soveriegn in gold at Baker Bros but their prices are off the map. The fact it has sat around for months doesn't seem to dent their confidence in selling eventually. i haven't bothered with it at £12k as there was a similar XJR available at the same price at one point!

Are you about anytime soon? I have a bit more free time now the house DIY has abated slightly, and can have a run up to Northumberland. Check your PMS for my number.
