Hi,

just acquired an x-type (54).

it only came with one ignition key, so I'd like to get another as a spare (not just the fob).

can anyone tell me what I need to do, what the process is and what the cost is likely to be?

many thanks

You need the key number, which should be with the documentation, they can cut a key from that, it will need programming to the car. With only one key you may have to take the expensive route unless you know some one with IDS, as for the fob, it would need to be programmed to the car, I used IDS for mine but there may be a series of ignition cycles etc that will program it in
I bought a complete, new remote key with blank on ebay like this - Jaguar S X Type 4 Button Flip Remote Key Fob | eBay

You can programme the remote to lock/unlock the car yourself but I took it to a local key place here - Car Key Cutting - The Cobblers of Norton - car key cutting - transponder key cutting - home key cutting in Billingham Norton Stockton Middlesbrough Teesside and Cleveland

They cut the blank to match my existing key and programmed the transponder for £60. They need the existing key, the new key (obviously) and the car to be able to do it and it took about ten minutes. It was about £110 in total which was significantly cheaper than Jaguar and it's a genuine Jag part.

Hope this helps
Main agent quoted £200, CARDIAC moblie keyman from Reading said he could do mine for a good price if I didn't mind waiting until he was in my area...I thought £125 was a very good price. I also had a cheap Ford key cut for about £7 at local shoe shop....it just unlocks the door only...just in case I lock my proper key in the car....again
The Birmingham Alabama Jaguar dealer will not work on any Jaguar older than 10 years. At this time I am able to program the remotes and I am able to program the key transponders. What I am in need of is the keys to be cut via the VIN. That way I have fresh keys. The one I have is wearing thin after 18 years. I have the key blanks, does anyone know who can cut these keys in the South East USA? I understand the security aspect of these keys but this is becoming a full time job to source a key. How many nice Jaguars end up being parted out because of keys? When I purchased my S Type i had the opportunity to purchase for 300 dollars a 2005 S type. The issue, no keys no remotes.
At this point I would purchase from the UK if the price was reasonable.
.
There are sellers on ebay who will cut them from a photo of the old key.
You can decipher your key code by following this http://carlocksmith.co/28-read-your... Tibbe key code, representing the angle of cut.
Try Ford dealers too if there are no local locksmiths as the same keys were used by Ford at the same time on their vehicles.

Ford Tibbe keys. Interesting fact. You can lock any Tibbe lock with any Tibbe key.
For instance your X type key will lock a fiesta which is fitted with the Tibbe lock and vice versa.
We supply, cut and programme these keys and remote.
Starting key is around £50 Total
Remote key is around £120 Total
Just call to make sure we are in the shop.
Usually takes around 10-20mins
Since the post is 8 years old I suspect they have probably sorted it by now...

Oh, our prices haven't gone up in the last 8 years.

This still confuses my boss with our fleet of transits who informs me that the key is broken as it locked the van, but now won't unlock it. Never checks the reg on the fob with the number plate.
I have been reading about the 6 and 8 cut tibbe key. x200 is suppose to have a 6 cut key. I cant find any information on how to read one. Using the 8 cut rules and 1/16th spacings and only 3 depths to choose from I can read the key just fine.
Any suggestions.
Thanks
You could buy a pick/decoder from Amazon?

6 cuts and 4 possible depths.
The rule is there's always at least 1 number 4 depth.
The tip is a number 1 depth.
Dead easy to fill in the blanks
