Parking brake broke

Hi, new to this forum...
Just acquired a 2008 xkr (Saturday) and was going for a first proper drive. After I pulled off my drive I got the 'parking break alert' and 'cannot apply parking break. It doesn't come on now but was working up until that point.
Until I can get it seen to is it 'safe' to leave the gears in 'P'? I have a pretty steep drive.
A Google search gives a range of advice from 'you'll wreck your gear box' to 'perfectly fine'.
To be safe I've put some bricks in front of the wheels, but it lunged forward a little when I took my foot off the brake so I suspect it's on the gear box already.
Just wandered if anyone has any advice or an opinion?
An xkr with brick chocks is not a good look🙂

Btw, battery is reading 12.48v - I've read that could cause an issue...

Tried the battery thing after a bit of googling, but unfortunately did not work. I've found a specialist quite near me so will get it booked in.
In the meantime I've found a way to park across my drive so taking the pressure off the pawl, so feeling less anxious about that now. And using a proper chock now for security instead of a couple of bricks 😄.
The car drives great - inevitably there's going to be niggles.
