Pedestrian warning system on intermittently

4821 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ejjbee
Went to the car wash the other day and just used the high pressure cleaner on car no brushes or stuff and have been noticing since that the car has an intermittent red warning triangle coming up to check the pedestrian system. As I am aware that this has been the subject of a few posts and a Jag technical bulletin was issued in 2008- is it ok to drive the car 60 miles to a main dealer to get checked out or will my bonnet explode ???

Cheers

Exactly what you describe happened to me; once when using a high pressure cleaner and another time when using a simple hose. It also happened on a couple of other occasions to me. I suspect that the pedestrian sensor (which is really a fibre optic device which senses deformation) gets activated by the power wash pressure, hence the fault warning. I always ignored this to date and simply cleared the fault from the touch screen. Then again, the manual advises to take the car to be checked (which I did not do).

I'm still grappling with why they came up with such a device :)

A
How did you clear the fault warning?
Thanks
You should have a red 'warning' triangle on the bottom part of the touch screen. I 'pressed' it and you get asked whether you wish to clear the warning.
I presume you also got the warning in the message center too???

But this will still leave a warning triangle on the display between the speedometer and rev counter. I had two 'sensors' replaced on my XK recently after this message repeatedly activated, although fortunately covered by warranty.

Personally I would like to find a way of de-activating the Passenger Protection System but I am sure my insurer would object.
Pete, in my case the warning between the speedo and rev counter would also go away once cleared from the touch screen.

It is of course possible to 'de-activate' the whole pedestrian protection system, in fact I think I read somewhere that before jag technicians work on it, they would need to disable it. But as you say, there are insurance implications.

Yes, the warning message is cleared on mine as well - but the warning triangle still remains until the engine is restarted.
Just to be sure, there is another warning triangle, an amber one, which accompanies the 'press brake to start' (or something to that effect) message, which I believe is normal and will go away once the engine is started. If there is also a red one, it's probably some other fault which is probably best seen to at repair shop, unless you have some OBD tester.
