S-type 2.7 diesel service intervals

Hi,

My name is Mike. I am a retired teacher and part-time ordained local minister (Anglican), married with 4 children and 7 grandchildren, and my wife and I are enthusiastic caravanners - the S-type being a superb tow-car.

I purchased a January 2007 S-type Sport 2.7 Diesel in June 2011, which is an amazing car (my 3rd S-type, the previous 2 being 3.0L petrol). It is very fast and very economical. BUT it needs an oil change every 2,600 miles, which is indicated by the message 'Service Req'd' and the fact that the DPF has injected diesel into the engine oil and diluted it.

I drive about 4,000 urban and 7,000 long distance miles per year, so it is quite unreasonable to have to change the oil so often - especially when the recommended service interval is 15,000 miles or once a year. The main dealer cannot find anything wrong with the car. Does anyone have any ideas or solutions to the problem please?

maybe the DPF isnt getting cleaned properly and is getting clogged up that much quicker , they can be removed and cleaned with a steam cleaner . ive had my 06 plate for over a year now and only ever had one amber dpf light come on and do lots of short runs back and too to work .

must be annoying with the service as mine has started counting down from 2000 miles ( at 1000 now ) about its next service ( last service was about 14000 miles ago ) so to do that only 500 miles since you last serviced it would be a pain .

As I unerstand it the DPF regenerates after a complete cycle, so needs to have a run up to temperature continuosly for about 25 mins, if the cycle is interupted it starts again from the begining, and so will not regenerate. the DPF burns of the particles so it get very hot, there was a software TSb so the vehicle will self test for DPF blockage which where required, will be replaced.

It maybe that the DPF is blocked and you are getting a lot of diesel into the oil, maybe it needs changing :?:

The DPF needs attention urgently, (that's URGENTLY). If the DPF is functioning correctly diesel should NOT be getting into the engine oil.
Have it sorted out quickly.

Thank you Victor, Barney100golf, Welshman for your prompt responses. I still have warranty, but the DPF is not covered. However I have been talking to Jaguar about the problem as well, so I will see if they are prepared to do anything about it.

What Victor said. You do not want to join the ranks of those with destroyed Jaguar diesel engines.

I hope you get sorted Rev Mike...........Just out of interest is there anything lets you know that the regeneration has started, like a light or a message for instance? as my next car will be the 2.7 D S type of XJ

There was a TSB about the DPF part of it said Recalled vehicles will have the engine management control module re-programmed with the latest calibration file. The vehicle will self test for DPF blockage which where required, will be replaced. So I would have thought ot should throw up some sort of fault code

Make sure when your car is serviced the service indicator is reset and ENSURE the oil is only half way between min and max
I think the indicator can come on if the oil level rises too high through dilution and read somewhere these cars should not be filled to the max level due to subsequent oil dilution and are only to be filled half way between mon and max
Maybe doing this will result in later oil changes?
I have had my 2.7d (has a dpf) and it will easily see a year between oil changes even driving 3 or 4 miles a day max,drive hard when I can at weekends etc and a longer run occasionally without any problems, but the oil is never filled to the max line at services to allow for oil dilution

Engine Oil Dilution
A disadvantage of active regeneration is engine oil dilution caused by small amounts of fuel entering the engine crankcase during the post-injection phases. This has made it necessary, in some circumstances to reduce the oil service intervals; the driver of the vehicle is alerted to this by the instrument-cluster message centre.
An algorithm programmed in the DPF module monitors driving style, active regeneration frequency and duration.
Using this information the module predicts the level of oil dilution. When the oil dilution level reaches a threshold value
(the fuel being 7% of engine oil volume), a red warning lamp and ‘Service Required’ message is displayed. Depending on driving style, a small percentage of vehicles will require an oil change before the standard 15,000 miles service
interval. If an engine oil dilution event does occur the vehicle will undergo its full service and the service mileage counter will be reset to zero by the service technician.

Cheers, Barney100golf. My Jag was recalled for this in 2007.
