Should I buy a 2003 x-type?

Hello all. I lm not sure what I should do. There is a 2003 Jag x-type 2.5l I'm looking at, it's from a car lot, it has 134,000 miles, the car looks really good, the paint and body are very good, seems to drive good. Tires look pretty new, same wear all around.

Now, for the cons...

The a/c does not get cold. Blows hard, heat works, but no cold.

When i took the oil fill cap off there was a little bit of white pudding underneath it. Not a lot though. I've definitely seen way worse. There is none on the dipstick that i could see, or any just looking inside the oil fill hole. Oil looked a light brownish amber color, like maybe it was slightly new.

Other than that everything ells looked fine.

My concerns are maintenance. I know the fuel pump is a nightmare to change and im just worried about it going out since its probably due for it.

I've already talked him down from $4000 to $2500

I'm planning to take it to a trusted mechanic i know, hes not a jag mechanic but hes professional and trustworthy.

What do you guys think. If everything checks out with the mechanic should I get it? Or do you guys think it's still not worth the odds of something happening?(like fuel pump or something ells)

What do you think?

At $2500 it sounds a bit pricey to me, with that mileage.

What's a good price then?

As you are talkiing in dollars should we assume you are in the U.S? I for one have little knowledge of the American car market but in the UK you could probably pick up an X Type of that age for 600-700 GBP. So if the exchange rate is 1.30 dollars to the pound that would be about £1900 here and I would be amazed to see a 2003 X Type for that much money in the UK.

The V6 engines are pretty bullet proof - mine has done 190k without any problems. I had the fuel pump go quite a few years ago and it was expensive but no problems since. The transfer box can be a problem I believe it tends to leak oil and start to whine due to lack of lubrication. Probably the biggest problem for X Types on this side of the pond is rusting sills which affects most cars as they get older and can lead to them being scrapped as repairs cost more than they are worth. However if you are in the US and in a dry state that may not be an issue.

I'd say it sounds very expensive. The white mush could just be down to doing short journeys and not warm enough therefore not getting rid of all the moisture. Take it for a good run, get it nice and warm and see if it goes away. In the UK 2.5k-3k will get you a nice low mileage example.

See if you can get your mate to do a hydrocarbon sniff test on the coolant tank - the white mush could also be a slightly blown head gasket.

The lack of aircon may be a quick fix - just a recharge, or could be a whole new compressor - a big bargaining point.....

Also +1 on the sills - get them checked properly - very expensive to fix properly, not a problem on cars from 2005 on.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. It helps alot. Well, the "dealer" suddenly changed the price from $2500 to $2750, says his "boss" won't go any lower. Even though the blue book on it is $2600. So, didn't even bother taking it to a mechanic, I told him I'd give $2000 for it take it or leave it, he wouldn't budge so I left. He tried to get me to let him take it to their shop and "fix" the a/c and also the tires in the front have some cracking on the sidewalls, he said they'd fix the a/c and put some used tires up front and sell it for $2750. I said nope.

Oh and I could swear yesterday there was 134k miles on it, and today it magically has 124k... Maybe I'm just losing my mind............. Right.
Also worth asking on here which is a more US-centric site:

A dealer fitting second hand tyres!!!!!!!! wtaf!
A dealer fitting second hand tyres!!!!!!!! wtaf!

I've seen Traders turn up at my local tyre fitter and ask for part worns to be fitted to a car - trying to maximise profits but not very inspiring for the customer!
This dealer sounds just a bit too dodgy, really sounds like you should look elsewhere - there are plenty of X Types out there, just might take a little patience to find the right one.

Surprised there has been no mention of checking out the transfer box for service record and funny noises ! (and when the gearbox was properly serviced - these are both items that can be an expensive fix).
