Sound like bearing trouble

Hi,
Does any one know what the most likely cause of a low yom-yom-yom sound coming from my 2ltr TD 2005 x-type ?
Most noticeable at about 40 mph. Recent MOT didn't show up any faults. From past car owning history I wondered if it was a wheel bearing.
Although I would have thought the MOT in April would have picked that up.
Any ideas?

Is the noise more pronounced when you turn sharp left or right whilst moving? try with the windows down to see where the noise is coming from

i am getting that now to be honest i thought it might have been a pad rubbing a warped discs thats why i changed them (they needed done anyway)
it is a muffled kind of sound mph mph or yom yom :) and seems to get a little deeper bassier when you turn yes ???
seems to come from front right hand
If it's a wheel bearing you can feel the 'play' with your hands. Go to each wheel in turn and grab hold of the top of the tyre (whilst stationary!!!)

Pull and push the top of the tyre as hard as you can. You should not feel any movement. If the wheel bearing is worn, you will feel a slight amount of play, maybe a very faint knock through your hands.

As has been said already, does it get louder when cornering? Is it coming from the front or back of the car?

Don't forget to do this with the wheel off the ground...
Hello When you are spinning the wheel of the ground have a quick look at the roundness of both the tyre and wheel and also the in/out movement, sometimes a wheel or tyre that is out will make a noise too or even try swapping wheels side to side if you know what wheel the noise comes from, nothings worse than changing a bearing and then finding a tyre has a knowledge bump.

This is better, but not necessary. The play in a worn bearing can still be felt if the wheel is the ground. DO NOT RAISE THE CAR WITH A SCISSOR JACK AND THEN START ROCKING THE WHEEL!!
I have no movement on my wheel bearing, but it groans and whines between 40-70mph. It gets worse going left.

You can get a pair of bearings for £30, and Im whipping off my hubs and getting my indi to push out/in my bearings for £30. Do the maths for piece of mind. I always do things in pairs, and at 92k miles, they are probably in need of changing. I was quoted £340 for them to do all the work.
Remember if you have ABS magnetic rotors in your bearings, you need to get the right ones. Suppliers can also give you a ASB detector to show you which side goes in first.

Have you thought about changing the discs and pads at the same time...? RedStuff...?
Im going to do the disks later, easy job, compared to the state my car is in at the moment, with no front hubs.

My offside bearing , when truned on the bench, is stiff and grinding/grating. Horrid, but no slackness
Nearsied is not too bad, but is getting that way, but as normal, change everything in pairs.

new bearings will be installed tomorrow, and rain dependent, will be back on the car tomorrow evening. Hoping it solves all the noisy vibration issues on the front. AS i do have new wheels, new tyres and new driveshafts all round.
Hi, Just been for a test drive with my 2 new front wheel bearings. What a difference they make. It is soooo smooth and quiet.

I had no movement in my hub when i tested it at 9/3 and 12/6 oclock. But when i span the hub after removing it from the car, it sounded awful, grating and stiff.
