Yesterday I used my spare key for the first time in over a year to check it was still working. It wouldn't operate the central locking remotely until after I had used it in the ignition once to start the car after which it worked fine in all functions and still does. Is this normal if a key hasn't been used for a while ?

It may be normal: perhaps the key has to be in the ignition to have a chat with the immobiliser before functions are enabled?

That sounds about right, from my (somewhat iffy) memory.. if I recall correctly the system uses a 'rolling code' for security and if you only use one key regularly the other will be 'out of sync' after a while, but 'should' come back in sync when inserted and used to start the car..

Either way, I wouldn't worry if it's all working properly now, thankfully you have an X-Type and not an XF.. electrical neurosis can be on a completely different level on an X250... :)
