Steering wobble when braking SOLVED

739 Views 28 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Deadpool
And so it begins Well i got 3 and a half months out of it.
Today just out of the blue I noticed a wobbling sensation when driving and when braking a noticeable visual wobble on the steering wheel. Wheel Nuts are tight
Before I throw it in for balance and alignment any thoughts?
My thought was discs but it was to sudden, and that wouldn't cause a wobble when I'm driving normally would it?

Well following the advice thought I'd get a front wheel off and have a look. 3 glue patches where my balance weights used to be on the driver side.
Panic over I'll sling it in when I can get a booking at Halfords and get the tracking done too, may as well.

There's a tenner off alignment at the moment and if you join the motoring club again, you might get a further £5.

Looked online my usual Halfords garage has stopped doing the 4 wheels. I'll phone them tomorrow, to make sure. Dont like to have kwik fit anywhere near anything other than putting a tyre on so wont go there. Especially when some chancer wanted to charge me 200 quid for it as an offer after I had tyres put on my BMW.
Nearest Halfords that do it is 100 miles away. 200 mile round trip for bloody tracking. Brighter side Ill get a double bacon and cheese whopper.

Blah blah blah 100 miles away 200 miles round trip........

C'mon LG stop moaning, you live in a beautiful part of the country, have a gorgeous car and if you get a half decent day, a really nice run out to enjoy it all....

Well, maybe not the first 100 miles I suppose, but you have that "brighter side" plus a nice easy 100 miles back with the problem fixed :)

I’ve found that the sophisticated equipment is only as good as the (trained?) operator.
Never used Halfords myself, but did call in about ‘ we won’t be beaten on tyre prices’ - they will!
Interesting to see Crossland filters ex ECP, and other spurious brands of parts on tool trays and awaiting fitting.
I’ve used your local ATS for wheel alignment on a number of occasions, simply because they are prepared to talk with you, show you on the computer monitor, and give you confidence that they know what they are doing - reassuring. Other ATS depots the same ??

I had mild vibration under braking on the ole X a while back: disappeared when I had new tyres fitted and balanced so you may well be on the right path. Tracking: if there’s no sign of any tyre tread feathering I’d not worry overmuch, but I’m old fashioned like that!
After several reports from neighbours re Halfords service centres: there’s one about 8 miles from us: I’d do a 200 mile round trip to avoid personally, but maybe there’s good and bad.

Used to be Mcconechys tyres until Halfords bought them out, so I dont mind them so much as the usual fast fit. Same people.

I would still get that wheel in the air and give it a shake at 12 and 6, and 3 and 9 o’clock just to be doubly sure there is nothing untoward before you spend your hard earned.;)
The manager at the local said he'd do the 4 wheels for the website offer of 2, Decent guy he is. only thing I have to wait till 3rd June for 2 new tyres to be delivered I want the Pirellis so I got the full set. The back ones are a bit feathered on the insides border line legal. That happened pretty fast but no drama.

Looks like the bacon whopper is out. This time. But have to go Alexandra in Paisley again soon so I'll take the photo of that huge mean burger then. :)

Already done, all seems ok, nothing feels loose or wobbly and can't hear any nasty crunching noises. Cant see anything, huge great black cover in the way but wouldn't know what I was looking for to be honest. Brighter side if it anything nasty is found when they sort it. I still got 2 months left on the car's ( supposedly, all inclusive) warranty.

I'm with jimbo on this as I don't think it's a balance or tracking problem, balance wobble occurs at around 56mph tracking about 70 both without braking
my guess would be track rod end / suspension/steering wear

That last part you've just added LG may point to a sticky caliper.

I had something similar on my XJ X358, passenger side front caliper was sticking, starting off rom a cold start was all ok, pretty normal and then, the longer the drive and as things heated up and expanded the wobble when braking got much worse and more pronounced.

Worth checking...

Sounds like you’ve found a smoking gun with the hot wheel.

found the bullet as well. was standing outside having a smoke giving it a nasty staring at, and noticed my usual clean wheels, Well front passenger one is covered in brake dust, black and absolutely filthy. And considering my "all inclusive" warranty doesn't cover callipers. I'll have to get it booked in somewhere tomorrow and get the AA to cart it in.
