stiff rear door handles

Hi my 2002 s-typr R rear doors are very hard to open fron the outside , to the point where you feel the handles are going to give way and snap off!! I read on a previous post that (Isabel) had the same issue and I am of the same train of thought that the rear doors have had very little use (1 previous co owner) hence very stiff/hard to open , but apparently the doors needed realigning by the dealer and took 30mins, has anyone else had to do this and does anyone know what's required to do this i.e could i do it myself?? any guidance would be gratefull.

Mine are the same (I wonder if they just all left the factory that way!) and I reckon the way to proceed would be to trip the latch with the door open (ie put it in the 'closed' state) and then press/pull the latch in various directions to simulate a poor alignment with the body. When you find which direction causes the lock to go stiff, you know which way to adjust the latch.

I might go and try that sometime...

Same here. It's on my list to be checked at my first service.
It was a lease car before I had it so rear doors may well have had little use if used by a company director.

In fact, being as I am fairly new to the jag club, I've got a whole load of things to get checked at the first service; probably just paranoia on my part!

My rear doors are stiff to open from outside, they need a firm hand to shut them as well.

Lack of continuous use is my thought

Hmmmm,

The other day I noticed that mine were stiff as well. Like you people, my rear doors don't often get opened.

I'd be interested in a findings or dealer feedback

TIA

Mine aren't too good yet the get used quite frequently - grandson/baby seat plus groceries etc (yep - I know they should go in the boot - the groceries that is not the grandson - well, on second thoughts...) - and the offside door usually needs a second "shut" to get it to latch - not exactly what you expect on a luxury car :?

Not had the problem with previous four doors - Mitsibushi, Vauxhall, etc :(

Are we talking real stiff or just heavy, mine just feel quiet heavy, but they close really nice and tight seal except for the drivers door, that one feel like a ford orion, crappy sound when closed and loose. Tha is the only thing I miss about my old BMW.
Anyone have the same problem

We're mostly talking about the handles here - the rear ones have quite a sharp change in resistance as you get to the point where the mechanism is released.

If your drivers door is loose then you need to move the striker plate inwards - reverse of the post below...

Got the tools out earlier and went to have a play with the handle. Taking my own advice from earlier I found that the stiffness is caused by the door latch being pulled towards the interior of the car. This means that the door is being pulled shut too hard. You can see this for yourself by putting your weight on the door before pulling the handle - it makes it a lot easier to do. So, to counter it, I needed to move the striker outwards from the car.

It's T40 Torx bit needed to loosen the striker plate and I moved it a fraction of a mm outwards, retightened it and it seems a lot better. I'm going to leave it for a while and go back to it as they seem to get easier if you stand there for a minute using opening and closing the door. It doesn't want moving too far or there might be problems with wind noise although, judging by how tight it pulls the door in, there's probably more room for adjustment than I give credit for.

^ You will probably find that altering the position of the door latch & then shutting the doors has bent the Chassis & you wont be able to open either the passenger or drivers door

Hope you like back seat driving

Just to add - after doing mine the other day they're now infinitely better, much more like the front ones in operation. It really only requires a tickle of movement to make the difference!

Good luck!
