STR bonnet scratched

I haven't seen this mentioned before. I have had my metallic black '56 reg STR for just over 5 years, but a few months noticed that the bonnet was covered with tiny scratches. Being lazy the car is usually only cleaned at my local Sainsburys, so I probably know the cause. However it is only the bonnet that is affected, none of the surrounding panels or boot. I know the bonnet is aluminium, but I still think it is weird. I'm pretty sure it will polish out but just interested to know if anyone else has had this experience.

I had this with my tdv6. My suspects were birds. Is the roof ok ?
Looks like abrasions from the car wash machine.
HI
That the laquer, its shrinkage, looks like the laquer cracks
usually heat of the engine, very common with cheaper 1 pack laquers
cheers
Joe
Thanks for the suggestions. It remains a mystery. I have never put the car through a carwash, and, as far as I know, the bonnet has the original finish. It sure looks like a flock of birds have had a party, but none of the other (steel) panels have the same damage, so I'm inclined to think it is more about the bonnet being aluminium, and yet no one else seems to have had the problem. I'll see what my garage thinks and post an update
My 2006 STR still has the original paint on the bonnet and no crazing anywhere. How do you know its the original paint and lacquer on the bonnet?
I think Joe has nailed the problem , theres clearly been a reaction which has been confined to the bonnet and inevitably caused by heat ,
I also feel that this deterioration must have been a gradual process so I am slightly surprised you haven't noticed . If the lacquer is shot ,
it won't polish out

The guy at the garage had a quick look and also said it would need re-painting. I bought the car 5 1/2 years ago and the paintwork was unblemished. It really has been only in this last year that the problem has appeared, and become worse. Of course, I have no way of knowing the previous history. Thanks again for your replies.
I would love to have seen it to be honest with you , its the fact that its confined to the bonnet which is the interesting aspect ,
I feel sure you can rule out any form of vandalism or accident and the only difference between the bonnet and any other panel
is the heat aspect , have some of these car wash detergents hastened the process , I suppose thats anyones guess
Well, seems Joe was right on the button. Car is now in a local bodyshop for a down to metal re-spray of the bonnet.

Lets see a photo when its done.
Hi

I had the same problem a year ago on my STR, which I've had since virtually new. I found the heat protection mat under the bonnet had come undone at some of the press studs due to wear/vibration. I spoke to my regular body-shop guy who said he's seen this bloom/blemish before and assumed it's a combination of the heat not being contained in the engine bay combined with the heat absorbing black paint on hot sunny days over a period of time. I too had the bonnet re-sprayed and she looks gorgeous again ...
I think dealers use cheap spray shops. As long as the car looks good at time of sale it matters not how long the lacquer will last.
Its not just the Dealers Stag its the Insurance Companies also , we have a DB9 Volante on a 2005 Plate sitting
with Flat Paint after a poor paint job , buyers I think tend to pay more attention to mechanical checks rather
than the Bodywork , its only when deterioration sets in and its viewed by a Good Bodyshop for a quotation that
they learn the truth
Very true. Dealers and insurance companies want an acceptable job at the lowest price.
There are many people on the Jaguar Facebook pages that always ask where they can get a cheap this or that.
You only tend to get what you pay for.
