Strange Noise

1181 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Big cat little cat
On starting my x type in the morning and for the first 20/30 secs of driving I often hear a strange noise which I can only describe as a slight scraping noise which I THINK is related to the steering. After this initial period it cannot be heard for the rest of the day. Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. Ta

Is the handbrake or any other brake sticking to the disc and taking a few spins of the wheels to loosen up?

I think you could be right; mine has done this for years after a brake pad change, the handbrake also sticks down after a wash and I have to power it off.
Hi Pollensa, With this new layout I cannot find what car you have but will add my bit anyway. My 2002 2.1L petrol had a similar noise and it turned out to be the vacuum pump. It operates to give brake vacuum asistance as soon as the engine is started and, like yours, mine was noisy at initial start-up but quiet for the rest of the day. I stripped it down, serviced it as best I could, and then refitted it. It has been silent ever since (4 years now). There is a Jaguar modification to remove it completely as it is not 100% necessary and I would imagine not fitted to the later models.
Hope this helps
Richard
As above.

Please tell us what car you have in order that we may have a fighting chance. Also, describe more the noise. When, where etc..

Noise diagnosis on a forum is ni-on impossible, but there is a steering related common fault. This usually manifests itself as a squeek from the steering colunm when warm. You don't describe this, so it could be something else. The squeek I mention is easily cured with an additive in the fluid.
