Tailgate trim removal

Having now proved that my tailgate wiper motor is not working, even if the tailgate glass is open, I realise I now need to get to the motor assembly. Can anyone advise, please, on how to remove the trim panels off the tailgate so that I can get to the motor and its wiring. Is there a known fail point that I should home in on, or will be checking each wire individually for continuity :?:

Hi,
If you open the glass, you will see that there is a trim around the wiper drive and window catch. this unclips rearwards, (the rubber window seal also hold it in place.) This will give you some access to the motor assy. If you need more access and need to get the whole lower tailgate trim off, I seem to remember that first you carefully unclip the centre (carpeted) panel on the lower tailgate trim (using a thin tool), this exposes some torx screws, that once removed allow the whole trim to come off.
As for failure points of the wiper itself I'm afraid I cant help as mine has never failed :)

Ah! The phantom clicking noise  I get that occasionally, and as I have been suffering with the tailgate glass releasing on startup, I assumed that this was a repeat of the problem. However, when I get out of the car I find the glass is still securely latched and there is no door open warning when I return to the drivers seat and close my door. I'll certainly be having a good check round, once I get the trim(s) off. I'll take some pics and post them up if I find anything of note.

Have to report I failed miserably in removing the tailgate trims. Not sure if the fact that I cannot open the glass hatch, unless it does it by itself  has a bearing on what can be removed. I was able to remove the carpet centre panel and the 4 torx-headed screws visible underneath, but after that the main panel that is still covering the wiper motor absolutely refused to budge. I could see two moulded supports that appeared to have some sort of connection with the tailgate, but could not get anything between metal and moulding to see if they would part company. Infuriating thing was that I could see the wiring to the wiper, but not enough slack to be able to get circuit testing on them. Double drat....

Pete,

I had the pleasure of removing my tailgate panel (turned out to be a waste of time) and found that you need to start pulling the panel along the glass section edge first. There is also the small panel in that area which can and should be removed first, this makes it easier to remove the larger section. The tailgate panel has several push/snap fit studs all around the inside which are really tight, in fact when you eventually get to the re-fitting stage a small rubber mallet is a great tool for getting them to 'snap' back in to place.

I went down this troublesome route first only to find that it was the wiper shaft that had siezed and not the motor failed! A simple check is to open the glass tailgate and see if you can manually turn the wiper shaft, mine started to fail which in turn produced a clicking sound, then complete failure. The siezed shaft was the culprit and after it's removal and silicone grease applied it's now as good if not better than new.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

FJ.

PS: And when you eventually get to the motor it's a standard Ford unit so shop around if you actually need it and avoid the 'J' factor!

Have read this post, I think I've got both problems, as the last time the tailgate glass popped on startup, I checked if the motor would work and got zilch. Plus I can't move the arm, so guess that its seized, which has probaly caused the motor to fail as well. The fuse hasn't gone, so just need to confirm that I've got electricty to and from the motor before I chuck it. Thanks FJ for the tips about the trim and that the motor is a Ford item. Next time I can open the tailgate glass, I'll get on it!

my rear wiper motor stopped working and i took it to stratstone jag to get it replaced (ÂŁ202) but if an hour got phone call saying the window mech was sized and had caused the motor to burn out in the end the total cost was ÂŁ299.78  , i'm going to ring jag uk tomorrow as this looks like its common fault, this is not a part that is on the service list for lube etc .... and as my stealer pointed out to me it is never cleaned lubed up etc as you would have to remove the wiper arm and the full mech (on window).

jag must know its a problem as the dealer said most of the 05/06 cars they have had in for a wiper motor fault is down to this mech :x .

will let you know what is said but thing others need to ring and complain about this.

rear trim is pop off centre carpet bit 4 screws and the rest just pulls off, mine came off easy after first pull
