Tailpipe replacement

2986 Views 18 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Cambo351
Thinking of replacing my tailpipes with some nice chrome ones. But not sure if they are joined with the exhaust and would need to replace the rear exhaust. Does anyone know if the tailpipes themselves can be taken off? Not got under the car yet so thought i would ask first.Anyone know of a good place to get any?

Hi I remember my old x308 XJR had bolt on's that were removable so maybe the X350 does as well. I had the complete system replaced by Longlife exhausts who have out lets all over the country. You could ask if they will do just the tail pipes as I'm sure they do. :)
Mine have an allen key headed nut on each tailpipe section holding them on.
I had some tail pipes made by Hayward & Scott for my 2004 SE 4.2 and kept them when I sold the car. I would like to sell them. PM me if anyone wants more info or picture. On my current 2007 XJR the tail pipes are attached to the silencer and would have to be cut off.
Broadoakboy is correct.
Seem some on ebay but not sure if i need to get the ones cut off to replace first and they seem cheap so manybe not good quality.Ill email Longlife exhaust for a quote and replacement and see how we get one thanks guys.
The finishers on my 2004 XJR are bolt-ons, with an allen-key bolt holding them in place.
I took them off last weekend to clean them up. I would like to eventually get a nice pair of bigger chrome ones like the Portfolios.
They don't appear in the JEPC though. So I imagine i'll have to find someone to make a custom pair.

I don't know about you, but they look just about perfect to me!

Any bigger and they'd look silly.

More pics of Portfolios.

I agree, that's what makes them just the right size....in my eyes anyhow....

Not sure why you want to change the original polished stainless steel trims !
I find the standard ones on the standard XJR a little, too understated.

Compare those to the ones on the Portfolio...can't help but feel a little self-conscious....

OK I meant stainless, or whatever the factory ones are. Said chrome as in "nice and shiny"...

Yes, I see what you mean, they look like fighter jet afterburners !!

I want the same. The pipes on my SV8 look the same as the XJR. I want the Portfolio ones or some HQ aftermarket ones....... Any tips?
Me too they look awesome. Could do with a bit more rumble too though. Was driving round today with the windows down through a nice long tunnel. Supercharger makes more noise than exhaust tout my brother in law said his house was shaking as I reversed up his driveway.

Gotta love the rumble. Anyone have a cure for the lead foot syndrome I seem to have developed? Have to keep checking my speed, I know it's not big / clever but it's just so easy when you let your mind slip for a moment.
You'll need a heavy spring to stop you pushing so hard on the pedal. I know it's so easy to let the speed creep up. I agree with Cambo the original exhaust tips look like a couple of pea shooters sticking out the back, But too big looks silly. The Portfolio size ones look just about right and fill the cut outs just nicely.
Try a device called Guardian. lovely little toy for those with lead feet.
After checking the EPC, it seems that to get the genuine Portfolio tailpipes, you have to buy the complete rear exhausts, it's not like the XJR where the tip just bolts on...I wonder if they sound different? Cause that's a lot of dough otherwise...

Right side C2C30004, Left side C2C30005, £203.27 each plus VAT according to rimmerbros....:(

I wonder if these would up the rumble factor as well? Lot of dosh though
For not that much more I had a complete cat back stainless freeflow system fitted to my X308 with custom sound (as loud or quiet as you desire) and a choice of finishers from Longlife exhausts.
But i'm a pedant, an aftermarket or custom setup would have to look indentical to the Portfolio ones.

Exhaust finishers are usually too short, and from a side-on angle, you can see the smaller real pipe (my X-Type for example) at least with the Portfolio & even the standard XJR they made them longer to try hide the inner pipe.

BTW I would not find anything aftermarket and worth having for £500 over here!
