Not certain but is it the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve, ie crankcase breather hose and valve)?

Might jog someone's memory to reply.

.
Tapping from the top end is often a lazy hydraulic cam follower. They are filled with engine oil to self adjust so if it's that, an engine flush and new oil and filter can sort it, or a fast long motorway run.

In diesels it can be a leaky fuel injector seal. That often eventually sprays out black tar so it becomes visible, it's called the Black Death.
I think it is a PCV valve; I don't know of any Jag that uses hydraulic tappets.
I listened to the thing circled with a stethoscope
Definately from there or appearing to possibly travelling through it
Raffles your engine type isn't in your signature.

Paul, the 2.7 litre diesel does have hydrobolic, there are some on eBay. I'll have to read about the 3-litre and 2.5-litre and V8 engines, no time now though.

They may have bucket and shim followers like the old Jag engines?

Here's a brief spec from Wiki:

...
V6 engines used are the Ford Duratec unit which is used extensively throughout the Ford model range (and in Ford subsidiary companies).

The 2.5 L V6 engine was not available for vehicles exported to the United States and Canada.

Diesel engines are the Ford/Peugeot 2.7L HDi Ford AJD-V6/PSA DT17 which is used in a number of Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Jaguar and Landrover models.
...
Here we go, a bit more info on the Duratec Jaguar engine, DAMB (Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket!) tappets:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_V6_engine

We learn (or are reminded) of something new every day.

Thanks Paul! :)

That's the EVAP purge valve (remove the engine cover to see it fully) which releases fuel vapours from the fuel tank into the inlet manifold when the ECM triggers it.

If its operating all the time it could be faulty or you could have a fuel vapour leak.

Fault codes P0455/P0456 but check the fuel filler cap seal first for leaks.
No codes car runs fine..its just constant loud tapping at idle
