VINs & Production Numbers

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a nerd for VIN & production numbers, so apologies! I still think driving our machines to be the most important thing though.

I was fooling around with TOPIx earlier on and found a listing of XK production VIN dates. I wondered if anyone else might share this interest and help me with my findings?

Below is a table of some of the VINs, including my own early car. I assume that B00001 to B00378 were prototypes, test cars, safety test cars and pre-production factory cars. I confess I haven't yet looked into the introduction dates of models, but that info would be helpful should anyone have it lying around.

It would appear that production was well underway during Q1 of 2006, ready for what appears to be a release date to the public of mid May. If anyone else is happy to share their VIN and registration or invoice dates that would be helpful, to build up a picture of XK production over the years. If its of interest?

Tim

Hi Guys!
Using the opportunity I'd like to say hello to everyone as this is my first post on the forum.
I hope it's not a problem that I'll revive this conversation topic.
I've recently purchased XK 4.2 NA that was produced in 2006, however as soon as I noticed this thread I was really curious, because my vin number ends with B00152. Is it possible to be from 2006 considering that XKs starts from B00379?

Regards,
Alex

Hi Alex and welcome.

Your car likely came off the production line in Q4 2005. Cars with numbers below B00379 were known as Field Evaluation Units (FEU) to verify the production process, then used for engineering assessment, press and publicity. Production numbers probably started from the first actual cars built which will have been the full protypes. This would then be followed by a short pre production run to find out any issues in both production and completed cars with the official production starting after this. Many of the pre production cars would have been destroyed in crash tests and other tests to destruction. Others were eventually sold off to the (unsuspecting) public via dealers.

I have records of 15 cars that are still on the road, with VINs before yours. If you let me know the full VIN, I should be able to give you some additional information on your car.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your warm welcome.

That is really interesting. For your reference I'm sending you my full VIN SAJDA43B075B00152.

I'm very curious if there is some additional details that can be retrieved based on this.

Kind regards!

Hi and welcome.

Your car (Coupe or convertible?) must be one of the very last cars to be built in 2005. Do you have the build date?

B000379 has a 20 Dec 05 build date, and B000413 was the last car built in 2005.

The car is a convertible indigo blue according to the CARFAX report the car was manufactured and shipped to original dealer on December 1st 2005 the source quoted was NICB the actual date US Customs has it arriving in America February 21st 2006 Newark NJ. Is there a way to confirm the build date more accurately?

Karlos,

Jaguar model years, as opposed to calendar years, is a slightly confusing topic, discussed briefly earlier in this thread.

In our case all the cars sold at launch and in the year 2006 were 2007 model year cars. Even your car which was first registered on Saturday 26th November 2005. (BTW, your reg VX55 EZL has also previously been associated with K600 ROB).

Hi Tim,

Thank you for looking into that for me, much appreciated sir. The guy that originally owned it had a letter from Jaguar stating something similar, I can send you a copy if you are interested.

I don’t suppose you know where i would be able to fix the leather dash on them? Preferably Cheshire area?
