Hi All,

I'm considering a warranty for my 08 xkr, and I would love to hear from others experiences.

thanks

All I can say is if it’s directly from Jaguar Land Rover, do it.

Spending £400 - £600/ year on warranty as insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances on the engine and gearbox is worth every penny in my view. In your case, your car is 9 years so even more pertinent that you cover your asset just in case!
Until my cars got up to the level where most were sold through dealers, I always bought privately and took the saving. Warranties exist because they make money for the warranty companies. All things being equal, you will not get back the money you pay for a warranty. It's the same with all insurance. Therefore, *on balance* and unless it's compulsory, you'll be better off without it.

The issue comes when something breaks, costs £2K to fix and you haven't got £2K. Then it's easier to pay £x on a warranty and you don't get the cashflow hit.

Ironically the only cars I've bought where things have gone wrong soon after sale were all from dealers. And they were the last three. My S-Type's a/c failed on the way home but the dealer was a bandit and wasn't interested; my XF's a/c failed after 3 days and the dealer eventually, after some Del-boy tactics, paid for it to be fixed locally; my XK's starter motor failed after 3 weeks and the dealer eventually replaced it, though it cost me two days' travelling and fuel. They weren't interested in collecting/returning.

Therefore my personal conclusion is: if you are OK for cash, save your money and take your chances. If you live from month to month, take the warranty. Ultimately it's down to your 'risk profile', as the money boffs call it :)

Never had a warranty other than the Manufacturers one and I agree with you totally Simpo , I have always found that if I
take care of the car then the car more often than not takes care of me
I took the optional 12 month warranty supplier with the car when I purchased mine, only cost £300 and seemed like a good idea for peace of mind.

However the the only real issue I've had was traced to two stuffed catalytic converters, and right there in the small print.... catalysts are not a warranty item. Good way to spend £2k.

Before buying check the T&Cs carefully, be happy that everything you want covered is included otherwise it's pointless having. I've got a good indie I use so I'll probably let the warranty lapse in December and use the "eventuality" pot I've been saving around trips to the petrol station :)
Cheers Simpo3, I have never taken a warranty as I don't trust them to cover the claim due to a 'technicality'

Jaguar extended warranty is not what it used to be. At £1000+ per year and three refusals from them (broken headlight brackets, worn rear lower wishbone, exhaust heat-shield all on a 50K miles car) I decided to just bank £100 per month in a savings account. If, after 4 years, i have spent £4400 or less on repairs I will be happy. I agree that I am fortunate enough that cash-flow would not be an issue but surely for someone who could buy an XKR new or even reasonably pre-owned even a relatively expensive hit (e.g tranny, e-diff, supercharger) would be survivable. As an example, I think I may have an air-con leak (very minor, the leak tests on the air-con machines don't pick it up but it is there nevertheless) and I am certain that if I would have a conversation with Jaguar Extended Warranty that they would again deny a claim on grounds of 'not failure' or ' fair wear and tear'.

Could I get it for about £300-400 (which is around what I believe dealer cost is) I would snap it up but at £1000+ (and I tried Warrantywise and Warranty Direct, both as expensive if not more so) I'll bank the money and take the risk and I urge anyone considering it to think twice before committing.

Items covered under warranty will be listed on your warranty booklet. Best to ensure you know what is covered whenever you take out a warranty. You'll find it's usually the engine, transmission and drive train.
When I bought my car from Chiltern it came with an AA warranty and it seemed pretty comprehensive - I specifically asked if it covered a/c and sensors (as they had failed on my XF) and they said yes. It certainly covered tha starter motor as I learned a few weeks later! So it would seem warranties can and do vary. But as per my earlier post, the car was probably £1500 more expensive by being at a dealer, and a starter motor is not £1500, so 'place your bets gentlemen'!

Agree 100%. My used, dealer supplied car, is coming to the end of its 2yr warranty. I recently had a claim denied then got a letter proposing a 'very special, limited time offer' to extend my warranty for £89/mth. Not a chance, I'll set up a little DD and stick £90/mth in another account for a rainy day.
I bought my car through Jaguar's approved used scheme and I had cause to use the 1 year warranty (it's now two years I think for AUC cars) a few times and found it to be very useful, certainly more than paid for itself considering the premium I paid on that car vs. what I'd have likely paid for a similar one from a non-franchised dealer or private sale. Like any aftermarket warranty though there will be stuff it won't cover such as some types of corrosion, fair wear and tear etc. I can't speak for third party warranties though.

At the end of the day, any warranty is a gamble. I chose not to renew mine in subsequent years and *touch wood* so far I've never really had a big bill but then I do most of my repair work myself and it's usually the dealer labour rates that sting most.
I was given a RAC Platinum warranty when I bought my xk from an indie. Sounds great doesn’t it? However when I did make a claim for a new alternator they would only contribute the cost of a non official part which was around half the cost of the jaguar part. The RAC would also not pay any diagnostic costs which is unrealistic at a main dealer. The car was immobile at the jag main dealer at that point so I just had to accept it. Not a great warranty then.

Lesson learned.
