What does the "Foam Covered in Plastic" that rests around injection manifold do??

Hi

quick query - When you lift the engine cover (mines a 2.0D) there is a foam/sponge covered in plastic (about 1 cm deep) which sits on top of the engine from the injection manifold around the oil filler cap and across to the where the injectors reside - what does this do?? (damper of some description?) - The reason I ask is mine is absolutely shot to pieces - the plastic is disintegrating and the foam that is inside is flaking and also on the way out - will I survive without this?

many thanks

Hi. I believe it to be a sound deadening material to help keep things not only quiet in the cabin but also from the outside.

hi there, i too have the 2.0d and know which piece of foam you are referring too. i dont think it has anything to do with sound deadening as in my opinion it is too small to really make that much difference, i think it is more likely to be for heat reduction on the fuel rail as that is where it is placed. you could always pop in to a dealer and ask what its for. ive always found my local dealer to be very helpfull if ive ever had to go in for any queries. you can enquire how much a replacement would be and if too exspensive check out any jag breakers who should be able to help if they have any diesels in.
thanks for that, good idea - i was actually in the dealership for the very first time at lunchtime (to get yet more poxy wheel nuts to replace those with damaged casings i tried to get off at the weekend!) and could have done it then, i'll pop in tomorrw and let you know how i get on
Jerry is correct, just for sound deadening.
My 'vote' is for sound deadening. Mondeo and Transit do not have it!
On the JEPC it even lists the part you are on about as 'sound insulator' part no: C2S26999, cost £6.48
