1998 XJ8 4.0

47,000 miles

Long term average 21.5 mpg approx 17mpg local up to 30.5 mpg on motorway at 70mph but usually 28.5mpg

It's the first 2 miles that kill the average mpg
In the 8000 miles since I've had my XJ8 I'm averaging 21mpg and that's based on probably two thirds local and one third motorway. If it was all motorway I reckon I could get close to 25mpg if I cruised everywhere at 60mph.
It doesn't matter about tootling about, it doesn't matter about 'on a trip', it doesn't matter about 'motorways'.

What matters (in my opinion) is the average mpg that your car gets. Each and every month and on throughout your ownership.

In my case it is 19.9 and that is an average over just over two years, not resetting it and going downhill and getting 99mpg. Which is as useful and people saying 'I can get 32mpg on a run. . .'.
I'm sadder than you - I log every tank and calculate the consumption - my 2001 4.0 XK8 averaged 18.6155 mpg (worst 14.4726, best 26.1961) over the two years I had it, my current 2004.5 XKR has averaged 16.6074 mpg (worst 13.4276, best 24.1851) over its 14357.7 miles - that's an average cost of 33.92p per mile.

This, except I averaged 31mpg on a run to London at between 65/70 mph....

Don't know what thread I'm in...

Reading this on my Android...

My 2.5 x type estate yesterday did just over 39 mpg on a 220 mile trip back from London...

My average though I'd about 32
I am averaging around 22- 24 mpg (usually drive in grandad mode)

Bored - So i worked out the Trip average from my last refuel yesterday
(Reserve light had just come on so about 5 ltres in tank)

Fuel cost per litre £1.32
Purchase Cost £50.00
Litres Purchased 37.88
Reseve ltrs in tank 5.00
Total in Car 42.88
Trip average reads 217
Average per Litre 5.06
Average per 5 litres 25.30

so not too far out at around 22 -23 to gallon

Hello everyone.
Well, I've done around 6k miles since I bought my '98 XJ8 3.2 in Feb this year. I'd say I'm doing 85% on a busy motorway (M25), with loads of slow traffic, traffic jams etc. and 15% on local south-east London roads. In average I'm getting between 26mpg and 29mpg. 29.9mpg was my lowest fuel consumption ever ;) I'd say the long-term average is around 26.5mpg.

I hope that helps.
2000 XJR, 120k miles, computer is showing an average (over 3k miles) of 18.6mpg. I do most of my running in rush hour stop-start traffic so I'm amazed. On the mway it will average about 27mpg.

Also, I don't drive like a grandad, frequently use the loud pedal!

Have to say, on the mway, use the cruise control; shows MUCH better mpg than I can ever achieve with my foot.
NOT MANY. ;-( 13mpg 131miles 10.2galls All village driving.

2000. 4.0 Sport
Brand New Gearbox in June £2200.
Written off in last week (July) Tornado Hail Stone damage. £4,200 to repair.
Still a beautiful car.

My 4.o litre will return on average 10.8ltr/100klm which works out at 26mpg Imperial
Usually cost me around $85.00AUD to fill up at $1.53AUD a litre which is 4.63 GBP a gallon....that's running 95RON fuel.
I pop a can of Nulon Fuel System Cleaner in the tank every fourth tank full and at 195,000klm is purring along.))

I should mention that includes urban and motorway driving and I usually sit on a 120kph.
XJ8 3.2, 1998 167000 total miles. The last 4430 miles average 23.6mpg driving around South Oxon & West London, includes a 2200 trip to Monaco over the Alps via Menaggio on Lake Como in late May.

Wow, sounds like a good trip - how did the Jag behave? Very few of our cars over that way.

I just averaged 27mpg on the last 380 mile round trip at decent speeds so quite happy with that
Quick question to everyone.. If I sit on the mway, cruise on, at 60-65mph the instant fuel consumption is reading anywhere between 22-29mpg. However if I sit at 90 with cruise on it is constantly reading anywhere from 30-35mpg.

As far as I was aware the official figures suggest an XJR won't get more than about 29mpg in any situation??!... Not complaining, just confusing me slightly...
Fuel consumption is only important when you need to know how much it is costing you to run your car. Thus a few minutes at 90 mph with cruise on is not going to give you a representative figure. It does of course, give you a figure you can use in the pub to quote to the hard of learning.

To get a representative figure, leave the average fuel consumption trip alone for six months. Thus you will get a proper average under all driving conditions. This will let you know how much it is costing you in fuel, and you will find that the average fuel consumption on a V8 Jag is 19-22mpg.
The 30-35mpg @ 90mpg was over 35 miles of motorway, so it can relied upon to be an accurate representation of what the car is doing (assuming that the system to measure it is completely reliable). I will say that since cleaning the throttle body mpg has increased noticeably.

My current average over 1500 odd miles since last trip reset is 19.1mpg. I do most of my driving to and from work in stop-start traffic so I can't complain.
My 120,000 mile x300 4.0 averages 26mpg. I zero every tank because I use it for work and need to record mileage. I have never seen below 23mpg.
