XJ6 1997 3.2 Starting problems

Hello, I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help or advise me. My 1997 XJ6 hasn't been used much due to other projects. The battery died and I replaced it. All was fine for a while, however now I have the following problems;

(1) When I turn the ignition on, there is no starter motor engagement. My friend managed to short the starter with a screwdriver and although it turned, it wouldn't fire.

(2) I couldn't hear any sound of the fuel pump pressurising. I can't now remember for sure if it did this, however I seem to recall it did.... hope it's not a false memory.

I've cleaned all the relays at the front of the car and checked for 'clicking' as per other forum postsbut no joy. The fact is I'm much more used to cars from the 50's, 60's & 70's and don't really understand the complicated electrics that cars like this have. Hope someone can help? Regards, Steve.
