my friend has a 4 speed manual gearbox and a 5 speed manual gearbox, i have a daimler sovereign series 1 4.2 auto. will both of these boxes bolt straight onto my engine or do they need to be modiified? also how much should i look to pay for each including clutch/flywhel/master cylinder etc?

If both boxes are for Series XJs then, yes, they can be bolted on. But five speed manuals are quite rare, is your friend sure it's for the XK engine rather than an AJ6?

I got my manual gear box for £300 about 17 years ago, don't know if they've changed much in value since. Had to source a pedal box, flywheel, clutch, release arm and bearing &c separately. The centre console is different, as well and routing the electrics for the overdrive (if your box has one) requires a bit of modification.
yes they are all from the xk engine. i think the 4 speed has overdrive but i dont think 5 speeds have them? the 5 speeds are from xjs's. spoke to him today and he wants £500 for a 5 speed but he wont sell the 4 speed. whats the chances of me getting hold of a centre console?

If the 5 speed is from an XJS it isn't for an XK engine as XJSs didn't have them. But you're right about the five speed not having overdrive.

The centre console plates were not common when I was looking, must be slightly rarer now?

There's a picture or two of the conversion here: Al's Jaguar pages
i spoke to him today, the 5 speeds are both from xk engines. he has had 1 of them fitted to a mk10 and a ds420 limo. both running a 4.2
