Xjr 100

Hello,

I have just collected my XJR 100 here in CH. Happy so far but a few niggles you gentlemen might be able to help me with.

With the car in D, sport mode engaged and tracs off, what should happen if you floor it from standstill? The last XJR I tested just sat in a cloud of tyre smoke (as I found out just trying to see how quick it pulled away from stop). This one just goes with no tyre squeal at all. Is it down on power?

It's a well looked after example, but has been sitting and used for short trips by the dealer for the last couple of weeks.

Steering wheel vibration at 120kph, above or below is fine. It has has brand new pads and rotors, dampers, drop links, tie rod ends, but I haven't seen a wheel balance since the (new) tyres were fitted. They are bad tyres (Nangkangs), could the shake be something so simple?

Finally, will the 18" Asteroids fit over the 100's brakes? I am looking for winter solutions...

Sincerely,
- Richard

Hi. You should still be able to light up the tyres with trac off and in sport mode. The vibration could well be the tyres and getting them rebalanced could sort the problem out. :)
I thought as much. Any ideas why it won't?

Don't worry, that's not the sole purpose of the car, just makes one wonder...

Does the car seem to have the same get up and go as the other XJR ????
I tested 4 before buying this one. A 1999, 1998 then a 2002 now finally this 2002 100. The first 2002 I tested I would say felt the fastest. With tracs off it would always want to spin an inside at junctions. This 100 not so much. It will but needs a bootfull.

May be some others will be able to tell you whats what with the xjr100. May be somrthing was changed on the 100's to stop burning tyres out ???
I do not know. I have seen other forums suggesting the throttle cable might be too slack. I will tighten and see if there's a different.

Another issue I have found is the car phone, a corded Motorola. It doesn't turn on and the car reads 'no phone' if I try to select it on the facia. Any ideas?

Perhaps having larger and wider wheels on the 100 compared to standard helps traction.

It also sounds like a wheel balance is in order.

Asteroids will not fit over the Brembo brakes, for that you need BBS Milan or another set of Montreal, or not use the car in winter.

The diff on these cars is weak, you might find this out if smoking tyres is your thing.

Welcome to the forum.
Wider/softer tyres, better shocks, bushings in better order... there can be number of things that increase traction when taking off. Judging cars' power output by it's ability to smoke tyres might not be the most scientific method. :)
I agree, but it can be a good hint. Sometimes.

That aside, I have had a disaster day today. Oncoming car overtaking a cyclist forced me to take to the verge. Unfortunately that part of the verge had a kerb section.

I have destroyed the chrome wheel rim cover on the rear. It's bent and peeled away from the rim. Is there anywhere that sells replacements? Can I remove this cover altogether and run without?

- Richard
yes you can remove it, there are no 19 inch replacements, only 18 and 20. You need the correct spline, not torx bit to remove the Ti bolts and valve.
probably best getting it repaired if possible.

I think they are stuck on and not easy to remove.

Thank you. Which spline is correct? It looks like a normal torx head?

It's practically removed itself, I don't think even the best panel beaters would be able to repair this. I have to upload a picture.

- Richard
Ouch hope you get a replacement :(
Yep, that's FUBAR - I think it's an M8, don't try a torx it'll chew up the valve tube. Polishing the alloy underneath and waxing to keep the weather off it is really the only answer. Sorry to say. 500 sets of 19" Montreal wheel sets world wide at over £550 each.

See the document on the very first post in the USA forum for info on removal and my post further on in the thread on advice. It's all been done before!

Thanks, that's a great help.

The main dealer here told me you couldn't remove the trims as they acted as a gasket and the wheel wouldn't hold any air without it. Is there any truth to this?

- Richard
NO! total BS, they're trying to sell you another wheel, if you want it back to how it was, spend the money, if not remove and polish, there are your 2 options.

if you look at the wheel with the tire off, all will be revealed - it's a simple 2 piece design, rim and centre, the centre bolts into the rim, the tire fits inside the rim. If you check the document I linked to you'll see what I'm on about. Like I mentioned in the US thread, make sure the valve stem O ring is replaced as this is a point of leak. I've done a load of these, my car sits on a set without the stainless steel trims with highly polished rims and look exactly the same as ones with the trims fitted. Just stay on top of them with Autosol/Peak metal polish and a good wax. And they keep air in as they should because nothing is altered.

BBS have gone bust....

Thank you for you help. Very much appreciated. Where did you order your valve o-rings from?

As for BBS, their website is still tuning and they still provide rims for the F1 teams?
