I'm new to the Jaguar scene. Does it really matter where I get this done so long as it's at a reputable Jaguar specialist? I'm presuming as it's a (more-or-less) "standard" thing to do on an old XK once past approx 60k miles they're all pretty much the same and will do the same procedure? I've rung a couple, prices are:

Horner & Hudson Macclesfield: £480.00 incl VAT. Includes seals, re-programming software

Mugglestone Boston: £420.00 all-in incl new sump. They use a gearbox specialist down the road

Chilterns: £480.00 all-in

... I live near Preston but am thinking of using Chilterns in Bovington as that's where I bought it & picking up in couple of weeks & they're a Jaguar specialist. '07 XK 81k miles.

I don't have any experience with any of them but it would seem to make sense to use Chilterns to me, then you can pick it up as planned and it'll be done and dusted?

Although I can't vouch for his mechanical work, I use jagman at platt Bridge (wigan) for all my diagnostic & recalibration work, happy to travel from the south side of Lancaster as he does what is required & 3 times cheaper than a previous garage in a separate thread mentioned by the op

I'd ask if they use genuine ZF parts and check that they will be replacing the bolts as well as the mechatronics sleeve.
They probably are.
The full kit is around £200, it would take a specialist with a ramp around an hour.
There is a specific torque procedure for the pan and the final fill needs to be done at a certain temp. Not rocket science but easy to mess up. The kit comes with good instructions.

Bought my beauty from Chiltern, & had her serviced there with no problems at all, so they have my faith 100%!

Make sure they use the right oil and not some generic stuff.

Hi there Defonsecca, use either a transmission specilaist or a good Indy

Seems like you've thought of Chilterns already and had a couple of recommendations, so may be the best choice all round.

Cheers all for the good advice. Will use Chilterns as I'm picking it up from there anyway, makes sense. Plus I;m sure they'll do it correctly with the right oil etc.

Have also been reading the diff oil also ideally needs changing at around 50k miles..... something else to save up for!

FINALLY will be collecting my XK on Saturday hopefully, about time - it's been 6 weeks since I put the deposit down ! Chilterns have been remarkably laid-back about it, well-done them.

!! Yep, I've been told it's definitely a huge step-up from my current Alfa Romeo 166 3.0 V6! A car I've had immense pleasure driving & owning.

To be honest, I'd probably look to have the diff done at the same time as the gearbox, costs for that should be minimal really

Agree with you there Jim....that's next on my agenda too, as she's just turned 70K

I changed the diff oil on our XK a couple of weeks ago at 70k miles and the oil was slightly darkened but nothing to worry about but it's so easy to change that there's no reason no to do it regularly.
I had previously changed the diff oil on the XK8 at about 85k and it was in a terrible state and well beyond the change limit. However, that was a much older car and changing the diff oil is a nightmare job so I kept putting it off.
