I have a recently aquired 2000 W Reg XK8 thats done 110,000 miles. There's a noise appreared from the rear which is only noticeable when travelling slowly, it rattles/knocks/rumbles fairly quietly, not a loud noise but is quite annoying, spoling the otherwise perfect and quiet ride.

I thought it was the loose rear bumper but since I've now repaired that it can't be. I noticed that if I lift the body upwards by the wheelarch I can here the noise but its very heavy and hard to do!

I suspect its a bush of some sort, maybe anti-roll bar droplinks etc? Maybe shock absorber or mounting bushes?

Before I get too involved I just wondered if there were any known common causes of such noises or common bush failings etc?

thanks in anticipation,

Martin

I notice that some Jag parts companies advertise shock absorber lower spherical bushes, hopefully it's these thats worn and knocking. I havn't had a chance yet to get it on a lift and have a look, hopefully will do that next Saturday.

I still havn't located the problem. I checked it out underneath on a 4 poster but couldn't find any play in anything that might be causing the knocking.
The bottom spherical bushes on the rear shocks seem favourite but there doesn't seem to be any play in them....That said I dont think that there would need to be much to make this noise.

Maybe I should just get the new bushes and replace them and see if it eliminates the noise?

Going by your description and the known standard faults, even at a much lower mileage. As I suggested before it is likely to be the shocks.

i had the same rumble on mine....very annoying, but turned out to be a worn shock.just had it replaced this week and my god what a difference.only had one shock replaced and needed a link lead too as mine has tha c.a.t.s. suspension but dont let the machanics fool you into going for a pair..theyre very expensive and if the other one doesnt make any noises just leave it alone it still sits fine on the road and im very fussy!
topped it off with a new set of 20 inch rear tyres too this week and it is running like new.
hope this helps

Yes, I suppose it could well be the actual shock absorber and not just the bottom bush but I'm hoping it's the bushes!

It sounds like it's just the offside. Anyway I'll have to remove the shocks to fit the bushes so I'll soon see if it's them or not. failing that, if I think it's the s**** absorber unit itself (and they look like originals, quite rusty on the outside and it's done 111,000 miles) I'll replace the pair as at that age I wouldn't consider not doing them both! I've seen them advertised for about ÂŁ98 each so that's not too bad and the labour will be free as I' will do them myself!

Hi Mef ,
Lower damper mounts are prone to wear and knocking , also Jaguar have had at least one faulty batch of dampers/shockabsorbers .
The problems are to do with internal valving and produce a "knocking" noise  ,

Hope this helps ,

I've just had a similar thing - turned out I needed a new shocker on the one side. Naturally they're only sold in pairs so my car is the new owner of fresh CATS and two sub-frame mounts for a total of ÂŁ920. Ouch. Could have done without that...

The garage originally quoted ÂŁ1,200, but when I found as Jag dealer who'd do it for ÂŁ920, they miraculously shaved nearly ÂŁ300 off the bill. Cheeky bastards. Just cos I've got jag doesn't mean I'm made of money...

weezer you are being told porkies!!
my independant jag specialist got one shock and a link lead supplied and fitted cost me just under ÂŁ300 so they certainly dont get sold in pairs!
get it donr though or you will see a noticeable difference on your tyre wear

Re: XK8 rear rumble/knocking/rattling noise, advise request!

Update: I still havn't done these yet mainly due to a gearbox problem which meant the car wasn't used for a couple of months. Now that it's sorted (see other thread) I need to get stuck in and remove the shocks and replace the bottom bushes. Does anyone have any tips on the procedure, those top mounting bolts look hard to get at and quite rusty!

Re: XK8 rear rumble/knocking/rattling noise, advise request!

Well, this is interesting. I've only just had my '04 XKR and it was pretty obvious the rear shocks were making a noise. Doesn't sound terminal but is bloody annoying and clearly something is wrong - especially since it's only done 31K. The dealership had it back in to check and couldn't find a problem - having spoken with Jaguar, it turns out that there is a fault with the shockers on this series (no idea which cars specifically: age/8s and Rs/whatever) and they're having to fit updated shockers, which will be part-funded by the warranty and partly by the dealership.

Has anyone else come across this or can substantiate it? Obviously getting new shockers is great - I doubt I'll keep the car long enough to break another set...

Re: XK8 rear rumble/knocking/rattling noise, advise request!

This afternoon I finally got around to looking into the problem as the noise is getting worse and driving me crazy! I removed the bottom shock absorber fixing bolt and checked the spherical bush. There is certainly an amount of play in it although not dramatic, it certainly moves up and down and side to side inside the rubber gaitors, which is the sort of thing that could cause the noise. The problem is how to remove the whole shock absorber so I can push out the bushes in the press and replace them with the new ones. I can see 4 small bolts that fix the upper spring pan. I assume the top shck absorber pin is located in that but how do I get it off, how do I even get to it? Do I have to drop the arm and de-compress the spring? Can anyone through some light on this? Is it accessible from behind the rear seat back?

Cheers,

I managed to replace the bottom bushes with the shock absorber still in position! A little bit of inginuity goes a long way! The car is now perfect, silent! It's a pleasure to drive it now, what a difference and the old bushes only had a very small amount of play in them, you'd never have though they'd have caused such a terrible annoying noise!

Thanks for all your input, if anyone else is suffering with a similar knocking noise then I'd recommend you have those rear bottom bushes replaced ASAP!
