Bowers and Wilkins Speaker Upgrade

Hi all,

I am looking at buying a complete set of the Bowers and Wilkins speakers from a Portfolio that is being broken for spares. My question is would they work ok in the OEM system in my Premium Luxury or would they be better if I buy the amp to go with them?

If the amp is preferred how difficult is it to swap?

Anyone done this before and any suggestions appreciate.

Thank you all.

The upgraded system has more speakers and as you say, an amp, so you won’t have the benefit of them. I imagine swapping the standard speakers for the B&W ones would give some improvement but adding the extra ones and fitting the amp could be a challenge. I doubt you’ll find anyone who knows how, but I could be wrong.
I think I’d probably just visit an audio specialist who’ll be able to fit after market kit (specialist add on amps etc) to give the same or better results.

Hi JB,

The audio specialist was my first thought then I thoguht about the B & W from a Portfolio being broken. I actually reasoned the 2nd hand B & W would be cheaper but after the quote I have just had from 1 breaker I might be wrong. Now I just have to find a decent audio specialist in my area....where’s the yellow pages!!! or google.

Thanks Oz, looks like a bit of a faff to sort out but I'm sure my local car electrician can do it with ease.

I will print off the details so it's ready for when I get the kit, if it's not costing an arm and a leg.

Given you'll need the full kit including the amp and head units plus looms etc, quite an undertaking. Then again, depending on what you wanted to do to the standard setup, that could also easily run to a full car strip down and cost a fortune.
Glad I have the uprated system in mine - middle one, not B&W but plenty good enough for my tone deaf ears!

This is where my problems begin. I have the 6 CD head unit which I love, hate having to get someone else to change the music especially if it's SWMBO so I would like to keep that or get the B&W one, not that I know if there is one.

All I want is a clearer, crisper sound and a better all round system so I can appreciate my music more. I have surround sound at home and it makes the world of difference.

I might just go and see a car audio specialist and see what can be done about the speakers because by the look of it my car has the bog standard base system which will never be good enough for me.

Not heard the base "Premium" system. Mine has the 600w one with 11 speakers, external amp and a Sub, though to be honest, even at full, the sub is pretty hard to detect.
Still the overall sound quality is very good IMO.
So there are various upgrade options available outside the B&W.

Got this from another site
Jaguar Sound System ???W to S20752 (</=2011MY) is 8-speakers, no external amp, no sub
Jaguar Sound System 400W from S20753 to S61361 (2012MY) is 8-speakers, with external amp, no sub,
Jaguar Sound System 250W from S61362 (>/=2013MY) is 8-speakers, with external amp, no sub (NOT MERIDIAN BRANDED)

Jaguar "Premium" 320W System to S20752 (</=2011MY) is 9-speakers, with external amp, with sub (this is the same system as what's currently in my FL2)
Jaguar "Premium" 600W System from S20753 to S61361 (2012MY) is 11 speakers, with external amp, with sub

Bowers & Wilkins "Premium" 440W Surround System to S20752 (</=2011MY) with 14-speakers, with external amp, with sub, center dash & rear parcel shelf speakers (this is basically the "Alpine" Dolby surround system from the FL2, but the XF has B&W speakers)
Bowers & Wilkins "Premium" 1200W Surround System from S20753 to S61361 (2012MY), with 14-speakers, with external amp, with sub, center dash & rear parcel shelf speakers

And then from S61362 (2013MY) there are the two Meridian systems 380W & 825W (an addition to the 250W base system)

Thanks for that! Really regret not buying one 2 years newer which would have had double my 320w on the same spec level, plus better all round entertainment options.

What would be the quickest boost to sound volume and quality? Is it actually a bigger amp or can I replace with a few OEM speakers?

You need a specialist really but it’s normally start with better quality speakers. All speakers are generic sizes and you can almost always replace with matching size Alpine, Pioneer etc equivalents . Then an amp upgrade to follow but this may involve additional wiring.
But you need an expert to guide you as to what, as different makes have different characteristics so your preferred system may not be someone else’s. specialists usually have demo systems.

OK, being sat on the rig I can't just pop out and have a look at the car. I do have the build specs for it and this is what it says about my audio equipment. Hopefully someone will know what it all means.

Analogue Audio Broadcast - I know what this means.
Audio 6 Disc Player - I know what this is.
High Performance Audio System - not a clue where this fits in the specs provided by jberks.

That's all it says, so not much use to man or beast if you ask me.

I'm getting to the stage where I feel like giving up. The cost of a decent upgraded system is certainly going to break the bank so maybe just a speaker upgrade front and back and see how that goes.

Did you ever make any progress with this? I'd like to replace the door speakers on my 'premium' system but can't find what spec / size/ ohm they are. Its very frustrating.
Thanks
