Headlight level adjustment

Hi all,

Our X-Type's headlights don't adjust up/down from within the car (the thingy below the light switch, next to dashboard dimmer).
Headlights work normally, auto on, lights, sidelights, fogs etc, just no adjustment of headlight levels!
Any one have any ideas? Short of replacing headlamps at $1000 per side
Note: Halogen headlamps, not Xenons. No headlamp washers either.
Cheers in advance!

Is that the actual car in the photo? It looks to have the glass lenses that the HID headlamps have, as the halogen lamps (at least in the UK market) have a diffused plastic lense instead.

Either way, I don't think that US-spec vehicles have the adjustment option. I remember it being discussed before.

Its an import from Japan. God's own relates to New Zealand :)
Headlights are definately not Xenons either, but the pics are of the actual car. Maybe they didn't adjust in Japan either? Its odd that they would have the button for it within the car though :?

Unless it has been replaced though, you should only have the headlamp levelling knob if you have the manual adjustment fitted.

With regards to your problem, does either side adjust at all? If you get someone to turn the knob while you stand with your ear to the lamps (ignition needs to be on but not the engine) can you hear the motors trying to adjust?

There is no obvious electrical reason I can see why both would fail (i.e. a shared fuse, relay, etc), so the options looks like either blown motors or the motors are not connected to the adjustment screws any more. If the latter it could be that they have wound too far or that they have physically broken due to a shunt.

I'd suspect the adjuster switch, assuming that your lights are indeed adjustable. Mine went through a phase where the headlamps didn't move when I changed the switch position by 1 or 2 clicks, but then moved fully on the next click. My dealer refused to change the switch under warranty, claiming that they couldn't find a fault, so I worked the switch from end to end a few times and it reverted to normal for a while. The fault did recur a couple of times a few weeks later but has been OK since. Both my lights moved (or failed to move) in unison so I'm certain that it was a bad contact in the switch, and not the headlamp adjustment motors.

Hmmm, thanks for the tips guys. I know the motor (if there are any!) don't make any sounds - we've tried listening for it. We've tried all positions on the adjuster. Will have to check manual adjustments actually work in the weekend. It got through two WOFs (MOTs) before we took ownership of it.
Will update when we know...
