Hi all, I currently have a xj but thinking of swapping to a XFs on 20" wheels. I don't want a really hard ride does anyone have a XF with the larger wheels?
Obviously I'll test drive it but it's the S I want for the extra BHP and it only seems to come with the bigger wheels

Te ride is possibly a bit firmer than you are used to but having had an XF with 18" on it I can't say it's that much firmer than a standard XF.
It rides really well unless the surface gets especially bad, but the XF is a more sporty ride as standard and firmer still in S form.

After the BMW on 19 inch it I sublime. Not really noticing any impact on comfort even on the horrible surface on the A35 from Strasbourg that used to shake my bones. Will be changing to Winter tires on 17 inch alloys next week so will be interesting to compare.

You really feel potholes and transverse expansion joints, as you do in ANY other car with low profile tyres. But the core ride is excellent, especially considering how well it behave round corners. For a big saloon.

....... When the road is bad it is a bit bumpy but not uncomfortable just that you can feel it but then for the look of 20" and the superb handling it's worth the slight trade off.
I totally agree. I love the look of mine, I wouldn't change them.

Nor do I find the ride too hard. :)

Changed from 18`s to 19`s on my STR last year and ride was definitely firmer but you get used to it soooo quickly and soon forget the earlier ride.
What you should remember is the Jag XF looks BETTER on 20 inch wheels.Even Ian Callum says the XF looks best on 20`s.

Just do it and dont stress about it.I plan to get an XF SV8 next year and cant wait. They all come with 20`s as standard.

Thanks everyone my XJ is a sport premium on 19" wheels which don't give hardly any road noise and only get bumpy on very bad roads. I've had Audis and Bmws that I just couldn't live with for the harsh ride the Audi sounded like a convertible on the motorways with the roof down the road noise was so bad. I'm hoping to pick up a XF sport during the quite time for dealers before Christmas

Hi Dennis , recently changed from Premium Luxury which had 19's to R Sport with 20's and seem absolutely fine and no noticeable ride difference , think it looks great and a better ride than previous BM's with even 18's or 19's

Yeah you are right. I was expecting some come back on that. Lol. :)

I must like my ride hard, cause I love the ride in my car on my 20's

I must be in the minority! I had until recently an XFS with the 20" wheels and would willingly have down sized for a better ride! I now have a Jaguar STR as I wanted something cheaper and find the ride quality to be far better than the XFS. True it wallows and rolls more than the XF did but the suspension just seems more 'Jaguar like' than in the XF. On the motorway with Dunlops on my Wife's Mini Cooper S is quieter and over rough A roads I found it too noisy to use the phone... It was better when I changed the tyres and it did look fantastic but IMHO the XF on 20" wheels did not ride like a Jag should. I don't want the fastest car around the Nurburgring - I just want to be able to go down the M1 at 80 in peace and quiet.

Hmmm..... I don't find mine noisy at all??? :)

I think that the 'newer' cars are all like this. Previously I had a 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Coupe (phew) which was on 19" run-flats. Made the Jaguar seem like a limo it was that hard. A few years ago I had a 2002 CL600 Mercedes on 19" wheels which rode like a magic carpet. You really couldn't hear any engine or wind noise - it just went faster. My father drove a number of Jaguars back in the 80's as he was a Chauffeur and when he drove mine back from Cornwall to Lincolnshire he couldn't believe how noisy and hard it was - OK he now drives a Rover 75 which is on the soft side of a pillow but it just goes to show how much cars have moved towards having an emphasis on 'handling' over comfort.

Of course my last car was a Chrysler Voyager, which was like driving a jelly.

So the Jag feels fantastic!!

I find the ride acceptable on the 17s I've fitted but way too harsh for a luxury saloon on the original 19s. The S-Type in my signature on 18s struck the balance perfectly, for me. I guess the XF is really marketed as a 'sports saloon' with the XJ as the 'luxury saloon' so it's just a slightly different proposition to the S-Type of old. That's all forgotten when sitting in the car though - the interior is still a thing of beauty, even at 6 years old!

For balance, it is immeasurably better in both ride and handling to the E90 BMW 530D M Sport I had a few cars ago.

As I say, think I'm 26 going on 76!!

Better than you might think, Mercedes and BMW would love to have such compliant suspension and big meaty 20"wheels. XJ is even better!
