Open the lid of the telephone holder and apply a brutal upward force on the whole console. Nothing is supposed to break but it may look a little frightening though.

 

Just had a parrott phone kit fitted.

The guy gave quite a bruttal pull on the cup holder and showed me a screw under the cup holder, plus another one at the rear of the arm rest area.

He did say the wood surround around the gear stick can crack easily, be carefull!

Didn't see much more except when I took him a coffee to see it all in bits!

Break easily? Really??

I've opened my dash and found the wood surround of the gear stick had metal backing (very strong and heavy!). Maybe its different for 1999-2002.
