Daniel. Is the park brake still working despite the warning message, or is it permanently released or permanently on? There are a number of problems with the XF's Electronic Park Release reported if you Google it. Before you pay out it is probably worth reading through them as some people seem to have been able to solve various problems without resorting to a Jaguar Dealership. If you can't solve this yourself and have numerous error codes when the car is put on the diagnostic machine, send Liam at Jaguar Customer Relations a personal message (you can find messages from him on a number of XJ 351 threads) Your car may be out of warranty, but you don't expect a 4 year old car to display loads of error codes. Jaguar have had problems with electronic park brakes for years. They might look neat, but they are a pain in the neck when they start causing problems.

 

Hi Lee thanks for the reply, the handbrake is permanently released. The only answers I can find are either a wire has snapped or the battery could be low. I do get the low battery red triangle come up when I start the car but then it goes out. Always starts ok.

 

Low battery causes electronic havoc in XFs. Fix that first, then see if the park brake etc. is magically cured.

 

Agree. Always start with the battery.

 

Posts like this make me believe in the interconnectedness of the Universe! Coming to work yesterday I came to a set of lights, pulled on the h'brake 'lever' and got exactly the same message as the OP then I looked on this site at lunch time to see this reported. Spooky!
When I started to car to go home the message had gone and the h'brake worked perfectly, I have a suspicion this or some other problem will rear its head sooner or later, hopefully before my warranty runs out so I can get the battery replaced first.

Hi Wilf, just spoke to the garage the first thing they did was hook up a different battery, fault did not clear. Have been told it is now a process of elimination which could lead to a large bill depending on when they hit on the fault.

 

Sorry to read that. If it isn't there already, take it to a good Jaguar specialist independent garage...........Main dealers are not the best place to be under these circumstances, nor non-Jaguar specialists.

Hi, have you tried to recalibrate the parking brake. Disconnect the battery for, I think it is for 20 seconds but leave it 5 minutes. Then reconnect.
turn the ignition on, press the brake pedal lightly and try to engage the parking brake.
if that does not work I think there is a software update for the XF, just inquire at the dealer, if you can not find a helpful one, ring TAunton Jaguar for advice, nice people.
Other than that check the cable between the EPB module and actuator . Have the ignition on and gentle check the cable and connectors and see if the fault clears.
i had a 61 plate XF and it was always says fault, then would clear.

I had the same problem but found if you re-calibrate the EPB it cleared my fault?

1). Turn on the ignition, i.e. press the start button without pressing the brake.
2). Press your foot on the brake pedal.
3). Pull up on the EPB lever and hold for about 10 seconds.

Turn off the ignition and then start the car?

I have the 3.0d and did not have to disconnect the battery?

 

Hey, you may not see this post as it's already a decade old. But in case you do, THANKS!!! I was having this constant beeping issue. And also seeing the message about applying both the foot and emergency brake. Nothing. It never even occurred to me to try something like this. So simple, and it fixed the problem. And probably saved me a few hundred dollars by not taking it to the unscrupulous dealerships. Many applauses and cheers from me!!!

 

I had this problem for nearly 3 years getting more frequent starting just occasionally so I initially ignored it. I tried all of the above to no effect. I could get it to work by turning the motor on on and off numerous times but the problem was always there and the last time I was seeing it, it was occurring virtually every 2-3 handbrake attempt but I could find no pattern to it..distance, time, temperature etc.
I had it inspected by numerous garages who just pulled codes, reset, adjusted etc. or scratched their heads! I decided I'd have it in for a full in depth diagnosis and fix whatever the cost as couldn't live with it any more and prepared myself for a big bill but incidentally before that I had all pads changed as soon after the 'wear warning came up' as the rears were a bit low.
This was earlier last year and I've not had a single problem since. No idea if the pads were the problem but so far so good!

 

It has been reported that errors can occur if the discs are worn below spec and then the pads are worn too. The handbrake probably isn’t expecting such long travel, or maybe it goes to a place which is out of its normal operating range.
