Replacing sticky buttons?

Hello all,

I have a low mileage Japanese import and i don't know if its to do with the heat out there but the sport and stability control buttons are horribly sticky and rotten looking unlike every other button in the car and I'm wondering is they can be simply popped out and replaced? It can be generic buttons as i don't mind if they are blank and as i will never use them anyway. I've tried cleaning them with all the usual recommended products but all that's happened is the buttons started going white at the edges and the signs came off but buttons stayed sticky and now look worse.

XJ has a few wee mechanical and electrical gremlins i can live with as long If I'm not making them worse by leaving them but first thing i wanted sorted was the exhaust to hear the V8 which is done, replace the sidelights with LEDs which was done today, then replace these sticky buttons and eventually get the headlining sorted if it gets any worse but at present its ok, but then i don't sit in the back with it flapping around my head, oh and try and clean the headlights plastic as they look like they are filled with dry ice from an 80s video.

Cheers.

Hi. First of all, thanks for posting your vehicle in the signature. Not sure how, but I've never seen the X356 name, and wasn't aware that there were cosmetic changes between the x350 and the X358. Anyway, I can't help much on this, but I can say that my 2015 Range Rover has the same issue with sticky buttons. I think they had some sort of coating on them to make them less slick-plastic feeling, and that either breaks down over time, or attracts finger oils and gets cruddy. I've used medical alcohol wipes on mine to reduce the gunk with success. I've been careful to not over-use it, as I'm afraid I may remove the coating completely and be left with a slick plastic button, which I don't particularly care for (although, it would at least look and feel clean).

Re: Headliner... I've replaced the headliner in a couple of XJs and, most recently, in my XK. At this point, as soon as it starts sagging, it gets replaced. In my experience, the little foam layer under the felt decides to give it up completely while you're on a long drive, and you get to drive home with one hand holding it up so that you can see in your rear view mirror. If it's sagging, it's going to come down. Do yourself (and your back-seat passengers) a favor and just knock it out.
