Sealey BT01 Car Battery Tester

[Started as a new thread, to avoid disrupting my thread on the batteries themselves]

I have frequently mentioned the usefulness of a proper battery tester for the owners of cars like ours which have expensive batteries, and which are prone to all sorts of maladies if their batteries are in poor condition. I have been particularly impressed by my own little Sealy BT102 tester which also tests starter system performance and charging system performance - not all battery testers do. This charger is currently available from Amazon for ÂŁ44.11 including delivery - rather cheaper than the price I paid.

However I have just discovered the Sealey BT01 battery tester [note the exact model number carefully!] which appears to be almost identical and is available from Amazon for just ÂŁ32.08. I reckon that is a real bargain! It, too, also tests charging and starter system performance - the instructions can be seen at

http://www.mackay.co.uk/media/manuals/sealey/BT01.pdf

Note: be wary of anything much cheaper which purports to be a battery tester. Many of these are in effect little more than voltmeters and only indicate the state of a battery (how fully charged is it?) rather than the condition of the battery (How worn out is it? Never mind how fully charged it is; how much charge can it accept, how much of this charge will it retain and for how long? And how much current can it churn out when needed to start the engine?)

I have read a review somewhere which gives an excellent description of how these newer electronic testers measure actual battery condition. Can't find it at present but I will post a link when I do.

When I got my CTEK charger last year, I went for the Test and Charge version, which for around ÂŁ20 more than the standard MXS 5 charger seemed a good idea, it also has the benefit of plugging into the CTEK socket in my boot. This confirmed my old battery was shot.
I’m not saying this isn’t better than the Sealey tester, just a simpler option if someone is in the market for both.

Thanks! But does that actually test the battery, or just give an indication of the battery's voltage? Even if it's just the voltage, however, that's still useful and certainly convenient.

Edited to add:

I've just found this superb, very detailed, independent review of the CTEK range:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R1KB7PTC9TGZTR

It's worth reading right through if you're interested; it explains the various stages of the charging process and why the CTEK charging regime is superior to most competitors:

"Ctek smart-chargers use a charging algorithm based on IUoU, which is faster and more efficient with all automotive battery types (and which is distinctly different from the methods used by many other brands of smart-chargers I've tested)"

It also refers to the CTEK 'Test and Charge' device and says:

"Ctek MXS 5.0 Test and Charge: Newly introduced 9/13. This is denoted by the "BLUE" Mode button: This is identical to the MXS 5.0, but also has additional functions to test 1) Battery Voltage (12.4-12.6v static value), 2) Start Power (9.6-10.5v whilst cranking), 3) Alternator Charging (13.3-14.0v whilst engine running). Stated values are indicated normal; above or below are indicated as high or low respectively. It's an admirable attempt to introduce additional post-charge testing, but in my view the measured values are too narrow to be of any real value, and currently at a very high cost relative to the standard MXS 5.0. A separate digital tester will provide more comprehensive, meaningful test results where battery and starting/charging system testing is required."

It tests standing battery voltage, power when starting the engine and alternator performance; so I think similar to the tester you mention. The standard CTEK charger doesn’t do that.

I bought the Autool BT360 for around ÂŁ30 from amazon and find it a decent bit of kit. It monitored the ever decreasing CCA from 850 to 600 which was when I decided to replace the battery. It does all the other bits health a condition etc. I also have a CTek MXS 5.0 that is connected via a led confort lead, and used on my low usage XF.

Looks like good value. So does the OBDSTAR BT06 at about the same price, if they are reliable.
