I have a 2002 xtype 2.5ltr. the vehicle has covered 54000 miles and I'm about to have my third transfer box fitted by Jaguar. The first was a factory call back, the second was after only 20000 miles and now after only 8 months and 6000 miles its going in for its third. Is this a common fault ? or am I just unlucky.

For most people, the transfer box is a trouble-free item. You do seem to have been unlucky!
Is the cooling duct still attached to the transfer box? When you have the car tested for the MOT, does the garage use special brake testing equipment for the four-wheel drive?

Definitely unlucky! I had to replace mine just before Christmas, thats the third but was a recon unit....
