Hi, my left headlight is very dim, I want to replace the bulb. What should I buy? Should I replace both at once?
Also, headlight cover has yellowed over the years. I have found some DIY products on Amazon, are they any good? I don't want to spend money for a professional to do it unless I have to. Thanks all

It depend on the state of the glass. But these products are over priced and not needed. I use P2000 sand paper if they are starting to get yellow and use a machine polishing and soft polish to bring the shine back. Remember If they are really yellow the plastic also gets brittle and even if you have polished them they turn yellow again in a short time. Polishing plastic like the lights glasses is a sale trick to sell a car with less cost for the seller.

I have Osram Night Breakers in my Range Rover & the headlights are much for night driving than in my S-type. When I got my S-type night driving was awful but after adjusting the headlamps properly is now acceptable but nowhere near as good as the Range Rover. I have bought a set of Osram Night Breakers for the Jag but haven't had time to fit them yet.

If I recall, it's detailed in the owner's manual but here's a YouTube clip. This is for the HIDs, bumper off I'm afraid.

EDIT:- If you have HID lights with auto-levelling (the ones with headlamp washers) don't disconnect & remove the lights as it can mess up the self-levelling. It needs SDD software to reset it. Just move the lamp enough to change the bulb.

With the plastic cover removed you can get the bulbs out if you are willing to lose some skin..

I put Osram nightbreakers in mine, and it improved the output by quite a substantial margin, but make no mistake they're still not the best, before though they were dangerous.

I've got Ring Xenon 150's in the current S type, and would say they are at least on a par with Osram night breakers, but technology is still moving on, there are probably better options now. The Ring's came out top in an Auto express test back in 2017, but their current 2021 test gives Twenty20 Daylight 150's the top marks, https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product-group-tests/76760/best-car-headlight-bulbs-2021.
With regard to polishing the lenses, like Capri V8, I just used fine wet and dry, P1600 if I remember, and then polished with a Farecla G3 and finished off with Autoglym polish, all stuff I had kicking around in the garage. They're still crystal clear about 4 years on.

Regards,
OW

Osram and phillips has also brought out LED h7 bulbs. They are legal for some cars here Germany but not the s type.

Unlike the cheap Chinese bulbs they are directed so that can not blind oncoming traffic.

I was talking to an MOT tester about this recently, and if they are reflector type headlights, where the bulbs aren’t visible, as long as the beam pattern meets requirements then they’re given the benefit of the doubt as far as the test is concerned.
They’re not allowed to remove any covers or caps to check what type of bulbs are fitted, so have no option but to pass it.
Still not technically legal, but should pass an MOT.
