Lithium or Copper

Hi guys, and thanks to everyone who answered my earlier post about pads and discs.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on using copper or lithium grease when i fit my new pads and discs? I took the wife's Merc for new discs and pads on wednesday and apart from being stung for £320 (Kwik fit wanted £440!!!!!) the service manager made a big thing that they had used lithium grease, though I think it may have been his way of trying to dumb the pain in my wallet.

Also i was thinking of sprucing up my calipers when they are off and giving them a coat of paint. I have seen a few types advertised such as halfords but the reviews say this needs a good 4 coats before it looks anyway decent. Any thoughts?

It's important to note that copper 'grease' is not grease but anti-seize compound and should not be used as a grease. It would generally be used on the rear of bare pads ie those without an integral anti squeal surface. It is great for preventing screw/bolt threads seizing, but should not be used for guide pins etc.

White Lithium grease is ideal for metal to metal contact areas and prevents corrosion too apparently. From 3in1's site on uses: 'Automotive: Hinges, locks, latches, seat tracks, strike plates, cables, distributor cams, battery terminals, radio antennas, windshield wiper mechanisms, bolts, bearings and more.' Doesn't specifically mention use on brakes however.

Others may have more experience of use on brakes however.

I might be wrong on this, but I think they should have used Copper or Ceramic brake grease.
Doesn't lithium grease burn at lower (brake) temperatures?

Have a read of this, 3rd poster!

I'd check what they've used, if it's wrong take it back and get them to clean it off and use the right stuff.

As said copper grease is for the back of brake pads to stop squeal
