Noise from the flywheel area

Hey, car is -00 S-Type 4.0 v8. It makes strange sound when accelerating, its like something is loose. Sound appears only when in gear and accelerating,
as soon as i lift my foot off the throttle, sound stops. Mechanic tried to check where the sound comes from, and told me its coming under the flywheel.
He told me i have nothing to worry about, there´s just a little rock or something making that noise. Car drives good and smooth, transmission is working
nicely, but really could that noise be something i should not worry about? No faultcodes at OBD test.

Is it automatic or manual transmission?

If it's manual (rare) it's usually the clutch thrust bearing.

If it's auto, it can be one or more flywheel spring(s) broken.

If you trust your mechanic then ok.

I don't think it's what he suspects, but he may well be right.

If you're unhappy get another mechie to check, go to a transmission specialist.

Then I would get a transmission fluid and filter change right away. If it's auto it's the Ford 5R55N and that's a sturdy and easy gearbox, any transmission specialist can do that for a reasonable price, I would expect around ÂŁ350 max as it's common fluid. But get them to do a full fluid replacement, not just drain and refill.

Our member Bluechem can recommend someone near you who has one of his full fluid exchange machines.

Thanks for your reply. Its automatic.

Mechanic said that the noise is not from inside the flywheel, its from under it. I do not fully understand what he meant by this,
because i haven´t been under my car to see what the flywheel area looks like.

Oh, and also i have "Fault" at the dash, i don´t know if these things are related. Is it possible to have that Fault if your fog lights do not work? Tried OBD test, found nothing.

You need a better OBD-II Code reader I think.

I had good results with an ELM327 scanner (around ÂŁ10 on eBay) and Torque Lite app. It reads generic (public Pxxxx) codes and many sensors and I got rear ABS sensor codes but it won't read the proprietary modules in the car.

Others can advise you better than me on which other scanners are good with your car.

Here are some posts that you can refer to find the issue and solution. Hope it can help

Yes timing chain tensioners are urgent, I'd not thought if it because they're at the front of the engine, so I don't think that's your noise, but you must get those checked.

Your noise can also be crankshaft end-float which is not a big problem, but it's best to determine the problem cause as soon as possible.

Get the car looked at by a Jaguar specialist, make a trip specially and as soon as possible!

PS: Is your mechanic a Jaguar specialist, have I been insulting him without knowing?

its auto and has no flywheel.

Yeah, thanks TT, "flywheel" is wrong,

I meant the torque converter back plate, some apparently have springs despite being a hydraulic coupling. I couldn't see why but there we go.

Maybe it's to absorb clonk from the starter motor? Or diesels only?

And I don't know if the TC in the early S Types has them? Or the later ones with ZF gearbox?

It will still have a flywheel Jim, It's what the ring gear is located on, unless things have changed The last time I had the box out of a jag must be forty odd years ago. Or was the ring gear connected to the torque converter I can't visualise it now I seem to remember the TC coming off and the flywheel and ring gear staying in place.

As far as I know every engine needs a heavy flywheel.

In autos it might be the backplate of the Torque Converter.

My mind's dim on that Red Cat, and I know TT has done extensive engine work on S Types so I defer to him for now! ;)

It's called a torque converter flexplate, and they can develop hairline cracks. Its just possible that Victors limo. has developed such a crack. The diagnosis is 'work in progress
