hi i have just sucsesfully retrofitted a new instument cluster to my x type i now have all the functions from the sat nav displayed as well as trip functions like mpg and how many miles left in the tank plus all the other features like door open boot open low washer fluid ect ect works great
whats needed well not alot beleave it or not
1 new instument cluster
2 new light switch
3 get it programmed by a jag mecanic i got mine re configued today for ÂŁ50 from an independent jag garage that included a full dianostic check and cleared all fault codes that were created and stored during the satnav retrifit i just done and there were 65 of them in total he reconfigered the car to know that it got sat nav and remote climate control although these were working anyway the car stored them as a fault.even though they were working
that is it no wiring or any thing when u take the light switch out u will see that the two yellow wires are infact connected to a blank connector on the old light switch

hope this helps some one i know this has come up time and time again

Now, I've read the sticky how to guide and I want to make sure I have this right.
To retrofit the message centre I need a new instrument cluster off another manual petrol engined car with the same headlight setup, I need to find someone who can reprogram everything and remove any errors it throws up, have both keys for reprogramming and that's it? Although I won't be able to program in my original mileage as it will be the mileage off the new cluster?

My cluster currently only shows trip / overall mileage and has the "trip" button on the end of the indicator stalk.

So, where have I gone wrong? :-D

You'll need
Matching light cluster with trip/reset buttons
Instrument cluster with message centre and whatever spec your car is, auto/manual, diesel/petrol etc.
Re-program cluster, just don't fit it before hand as your car won't start!

Thanks Ian, are there any specific codes I need to check relating to the instrument / light clusters or just that it's a petrol manual?

So after thinking about it for quite a long time I finally got the Trip Computer retrofitted at the weekend.

As has previously been mentioned, a new (secondhand) Light Switch Cluster, a new (secondhand) Instrument Cluster with the Message Centre and some reprogramming via an Independant Specialist and all is working fine :)

Please be aware that the change must be actioned in a certain sequence as the security is through the Speedo..........
If you do a search it will determine how to do it in the correct way.....

The Search button is your friend..

A couple of small issues, some have been mentioned...

Do not swap the speedo as the first port of call as the car will not start.......

Get the Light switch, change it over.no probs............simple task

Take the speedo to the indy, have him change it over and programme...............remembering to take your two keys!!

As has been said, you'll pick up the donor car's mileage and it will cost anything between ÂŁ50 to ÂŁ140 to get it "corrected"

Oh, and spell it out to the scappy that you are after a speedo cluster Petrol or Diesel with the MESSAGE CENTRE ( with the long elongated window under the speedo) as half of them don't know what your talking aboutt

You get the Trip Computer functions such as Average Speed, Average Fuel Consumption, Distance To Empty plus some additional Warning Messages such as it telling you which specfic Door is open as opposed to the Door Warning Light just warning a door is open (not alot different I know) but worth it just for the Trip Computer.

Needs specific software not all garages have it......best bet is an indy.........

Can I reprogram the instrument cluster myself if I have a Mongoose/Mangoose and software up and running?

#42 ·
just tried to use sdd130 and a mongoose to recode a message centre instrument set to the ecu, failed to do it and threw some fault codes

ECU 01582 and 09582

instrument pod 09681
note these are not "P" codes

had the same problem with the old cluster unit but still worked.

all other functions on sdd130 seem to work and it reports the original config and the new additional modules I've fitted.

Do the codes stay the same? The min thing you have to do in a instrument cluster change is re program the immobiliser to the key transponders which I think you can do with the Mongoose.

code in ecu has to match code in instrument cluster ( also mileage readings should be matched) and match the keys, there is an option to match the ecu and instrument cluster that fails, plus instructions on how to match keys. suspect the bigger problem was the message center cluster was from a manual and the car is an auto so failed to match for gearbox ecu. now looking for a petrol auto message centre cluster.

I can tell you that you need to match the cluster to the car in terms of fuel type, body type and gearbox type. You should then be able to set the keys up after that though I haven't done it.

if your sure it will work then fit the new cluster, using sdd look for a fault on the instrument cluster ( diagnose menu ,display not working) you will then get an option under the extras menu to install a new instrument cluster , follow the instructions and go for the auto install. you will need all keys and fobs (min 2)as the first step is to erase the current key transducer settings. takes around 30 mins and make sure you have a batt charger connected as the batt will drain as all the car modules are turned on .

the milage reading will be one of two

1. the reading of the new cluster
2. a reading half way between the old and new

the milage is held in the cluster and the ecu,

I have a message instrument cluster and light switch from a 3.0 saloon manual if anyone is interested it has 22000 miles on it. I can put it on the classifieds section with photos if needed.

A Jag dealer can read and save the checksum, vin, immob codes, and correct mileage from an instrument pack, then use the stored information to reprogramme the "new" pack which will come up exactly where the original was.

The problem is motivating them to do so!

They must do this process to programme the car after selling you a new pack for 950 quid, so it can be done!
