Afaik, you can’t void the warranty by plugging in a diagnostic computer. It doesn’t reprogram anything, just read values off the network. It’s totally benign.
Id tell them you’ve read it and it seems low, so can they please check it using their system and report back.

Just because the opening temperature of a thermostat is 83℃ does not mean that 83℃ is the normal operating temperature. It is far more common for the normal operating temperature to be somewhat above that at which the thermostat opens. However, since Jaguar doesn't think owners of their cars need to know about engine temperature, there is no way of knowing without asking a dealer or specialist.

 

Does your heater blow hot when needed ? If not then tell them , your garage that and ask them to investigate. Nothing worse than a poor heater in the winter months. I haven't checked my car's running temp but the heater usually starts bowing noticeably warm air within a mile of setting off in the winter months and is well not after a couple of miles. My previous car a Volvo did the same but my son's Volvo ,the same model could be driven miles and then only mildly warm air could be felt from the heater. He plugged in an Elm device and that showed a low temp. A new thermostat cured the problem .Don't forget an engine running at low temp will be inefficient and collect condensation in the crankcase causing damage and corrosion to vital engine components.
It's annoying that Jaguar think all of us who drive their products are too thick to care and maintain them and only give needed info to their dealerships who mostly rip us off for basic servicing .

 

OK so a little progress today. After I started it up today I had the bonnet open and felt the inlet hose to the radiator as things warmed up. It remained at ambient temperature right up to the point where my ELM327/Torque app was showing 81C, and then I could feel the hot water circulation starting. So based on Rapala's post and allowing a little leeway, I think my thermostat is OK.
On another forum I see that a possible cause of low operating temperature can be a faulty oil cooling system thermostat, but I'm not even sure where that is never mind how to test it.
Incidentally Phil F, there is no problem with hot air supply - this morning it was a fairly cool 14C and within minutes of setting off I could feel the warm air circulation.
But at least I have eliminated one thermostat - and maybe a bit less for the Jaguar concessionaire to check out.

 

Can anyone please point me in the direction of where to find the oil cooling thermostat in the 2.2 XF? There is an excellent write-up in the X type forum by oilspill (https://www.jaguarforum.com/showthread.php?t=98819&page=4,) but it looks like the 2.2 X type is a bit different to the 2.2 XF.
