You only need to change it if you want to retrofit the messaging centre (what tells you mpg/range/av speed/warning messages/sat nav commands) or if your unit is faulty/noisy.

The speedo with messaging centre has a long rectangular lcd display under the speed counter. One without has a square box with just total/trip miles/km on.

You need to make sure its off the same fuel type for your car because the rev counter is different ie diesel goes up to 5 or 6000 rpm and petrol has 8000 rpm on the clocks.

So if you have a petrol you can use any off the 2.1/2.5/3.0 and diesel 2.0/2.2

Dont forget the light switch pack that has the a/b reset ml/km on. And also make sure that switch pack is the one for your car also ie manual light level adjustment or auto (has no level knob) for xenons

Also once you decide to do this, DON'T change the instrument cluster before visiting a dealer or independent who can reprogram it to your car as otherwise it will not start, the immobiliser is built into the cluster, also you need all sets of keys for programming.

Also check that the clock is same transmission type as your own, my first re-fit went wrong cos the clock set i was fitting was off an auto.Even though programmed in and key's done, it would always show an error message for the TCM on autobox due to mine being manual and obviously not having one for the system to recognise.

Please do look at the sticky thread about this topic. OP was obviously lucky that his X type had the correct wiring loom for the Multi-Screen upgrade - not all cars will.

Andy I can't find the sticky for retro fitting the instrument cluster with message centre, whereabouts is it located?

Now, I've read the sticky how to guide and I want to make sure I have this right.
To retrofit the message centre I need a new instrument cluster off another manual petrol engined car with the same headlight setup, I need to find someone who can reprogram everything and remove any errors it throws up, have both keys for reprogramming and that's it? Although I won't be able to program in my original mileage as it will be the mileage off the new cluster?

My cluster currently only shows trip / overall mileage and has the "trip" button on the end of the indicator stalk.

So, where have I gone wrong? :-D

You'll need
Matching light cluster with trip/reset buttons
Instrument cluster with message centre and whatever spec your car is, auto/manual, diesel/petrol etc.
Re-program cluster, just don't fit it before hand as your car won't start!

Thanks Ian, are there any specific codes I need to check relating to the instrument / light clusters or just that it's a petrol manual?

Just a petrol manual and you're on your way :D

So after thinking about it for quite a long time I finally got the Trip Computer retrofitted at the weekend.

As has previously been mentioned, a new (secondhand) Light Switch Cluster, a new (secondhand) Instrument Cluster with the Message Centre and some reprogramming via an Independant Specialist and all is working fine :)

Please be aware that the change must be actioned in a certain sequence as the security is through the Speedo..........
If you do a search it will determine how to do it in the correct way.....

The Search button is your friend..

A couple of small issues, some have been mentioned...

Do not swap the speedo as the first port of call as the car will not start.......

Get the Light switch, change it over.no probs............simple task

Take the speedo to the indy, have him change it over and programme...............remembering to take your two keys!!

As has been said, you'll pick up the donor car's mileage and it will cost anything between ÂŁ50 to ÂŁ140 to get it "corrected"

Oh, and spell it out to the scappy that you are after a speedo cluster Petrol or Diesel with the MESSAGE CENTRE ( with the long elongated window under the speedo) as half of them don't know what your talking aboutt

You get the Trip Computer functions such as Average Speed, Average Fuel Consumption, Distance To Empty plus some additional Warning Messages such as it telling you which specfic Door is open as opposed to the Door Warning Light just warning a door is open (not alot different I know) but worth it just for the Trip Computer.

Reading this with interest, does the cluster have to be reprogrammed through Jaguar, or can it be taken to any garage
Needs specific software not all garages have it......best bet is an indy.........
