My STR has a 'surging' problem which was diagnosed by Chris at Doncaster jaguar Specialists as being the torque converter failing - well actually the lock up not working correctly. I had all the fluids and filter replaced and it was a little better but seems to be getting worse again. I'm not sure how long I will be keeping the car so I am wondering about putting in a second hand converter which I can get for ÂŁ50 as opposed to ÂŁ500 for a new or re manufactured one. trouble is I know it's not the easiest job in the world but Jaguar only quote 4 hours to replace the torque converter so it can't be THAT big a job...

Hi cmdrew

Article from a magazine.

"Firstly some cars suffer from lurch, as it's become known, a lack of smoothness during changes. This isn't a mechanical fault but a software problem. Jaguar main dealers can reflash the gearbox ECU with updated software that seems to cure it.
Failure to the actual gearbox does occasionally happen. In cases were all drive is lost there's nothing for it but to replace with a reconditioned box-but were there's just a severe vibration, usually when changing up higher gears, it's the torque converter that's falling apart.

hope you get to the bottom of it...Gos

Well not sure that fitting a second hand one should be the way to go, you mention getting rid of the car, so I guess you do not care if someone else gets the problem. You can get a remanufactured one from ebay with warranty for ÂŁ350, but up to you the labour cost will be the same but if you do fit a secondhand one it may well have the same problems. the correct oil will set you back ÂŁ100 on top :) but I suspect you will fill with the cheapest

Mine has the type 2 lurch and mild type 1 plus it surges! :-( I've had it reflashed which cured the lurches for a while but they're back plus the surge is getting worse ... agh! The gearbox oil was also changed with the correct jaguar oil for the zf 6 speeder. Had the adaptations purged again which again cured it for a while but.... yes...... it's lurching again:-( I'm now tempted to go for a brand spanker torque converter and see what that does!

Yes - read quite a bit about the 'lurch' and similar. My gearbox is actually quite smooth especially after the service. The software has also been flashed but there does appear to be another 'common fault' when at around 40MPH the gearbox changes into top gear and then the revs fluctuate by a few hundred RPM. Yes if I was keeping the car for a long time I would of course go for a new or re-conditioned torque converter but no I wouldn't want to sell it with a known fault. But not all Jaguars have a fault with the torque converter, usually it is just the oil or adaptations as many other have found. I had the adaptations reset and had a full gearbox service with the CORRECT oil but it hasn't cured the fault. Regardless of whether or not I fit a second hand or new converter of course I would use the correct oil (again) - it was only done 2K ago so there would be little point in a full drain - just replace that lost in the converter and make sure the levels are correct.

cndrew - re your torque converter......you might try contacting Mackies Tranmissions in Glasgow
I visited there last year I think it was as I had organised a jag meet for around 30 of us and had a factory tour, The whole nine yards.

These guys are #1 A rated ZF partner in the UK
They remanufacture hundreds of converters for many different companies up n down the country and may be the best direct source to go to for this

Hope it helps
